Caching was recently implemented so it’ll help a bit with quota usage. Google ML Kit integration for offline translations in Damus will be coming which will give folks an alternative option without limitation. Also exploring some other options. Stay tuned.
Jack’s issue is that it doesn’t accept his billing information.
More options coming soon. I thought this morning about seeding my own translation service. Trade sats for an API key. No KYC, just your pubkey. Proxies to DeepL and caches translations. For use with Nostr clients. Will think on this more. Someone else also approached me this week with a similar idea but uses something else that’s not DeepL. It’ll get better.
1. Ensure that your list of preferred languages in iOS settings has the languages that you understand only fluently.
2. Go to Damus settings and select DeepL Free as your translation service.
3. Sign up for an API plan. It’ll KYC you (unfortunately) by asking for credit card but it won’t charge you. In return, you get a free API key.
4. Paste the API key into Damus settings.
5. The global fun begins!
It’s really interesting that none of the traditional social platform clients support full auto-translations. You can translate on an individual post basis by tapping a button but it’s less effective in encouraging cross-language conversations and their translation quality is generally poor.
Damus fixes these problems on Nostr by implementing auto-translations and DeepL integration. Amethyst too (though it’s using Google ML Kit offline which doesn’t have as good quality translations, but works well enough). The level of global conversation unlocked here is wild. Hope to see this feature come to all Nostr clients.
Is this something that implementing exponential backoff for retries would help with on the Damus client? I don’t actually know how it works or if that’s the problem.
I heard that apparently Bitcoiners and Nostriches love steak. So I made chicken thighs. #dontjudgeme
I shit you not this is the patch for fixing auto-translations. I have no idea wtf is going on.

I got tied up with work and other things so I couldn’t get to it. Came back after a day and found out Will fixed the bug and implemented translation caching too. 💀 What a boss. #[1]
All in good time. It’ll come back as we build more.
It’s spotty. Hang in there. I have plans to make improvements with more translation service options.
Prisoners - thriller. Hugh Jackman. Still one of my favourites in the last decade.
No. Kotlin
I will never book Spirit again if I can. My ass never hurt this bad with any other airline, from getting fucked by their seats on the way back from Nostrica. First and last time.
Since we’re including Hong Kong along with Japan, I like “Nostrasia”. Don’t think we should use any name with Zap in it as that’s limiting what Nostr is about.
All contributions welcome! I’ve been eyeing integration with https://fastlane.tools
I’d love to get Damus to a place where TestFlight builds are automated and frequent, and App Store release schedules are predictable.
