It’s really interesting that none of the traditional social platform clients support full auto-translations. You can translate on an individual post basis by tapping a button but it’s less effective in encouraging cross-language conversations and their translation quality is generally poor.

Damus fixes these problems on Nostr by implementing auto-translations and DeepL integration. Amethyst too (though it’s using Google ML Kit offline which doesn’t have as good quality translations, but works well enough). The level of global conversation unlocked here is wild. Hope to see this feature come to all Nostr clients.

Amethyst does afaik

Unlocking the the global conversation is key. It widens our audience immensely and allows us to communicate with people we otherwise wouldn't have easily been able to do so. 🤙🏻

This is a huge superpower.

This was on the roadmap at Twitter.

It will be a huge advantage for any clients that implement well and will truly create the global “public square.”

jack is always righttt!🤓

Back on the road to the digital Tower of Babel

How do I use this feature? I’m on Damus

+1

1. Ensure that your list of preferred languages in iOS settings has the languages that you understand only fluently.

2. Go to Damus settings and select DeepL Free as your translation service.

3. Sign up for an API plan. It’ll KYC you (unfortunately) by asking for credit card but it won’t charge you. In return, you get a free API key.

4. Paste the API key into Damus settings.

5. The global fun begins!

Thanks. KYC is a no go though.

More non-KYC translation options are coming to Damus.

Great!!

We launched https://nokyctranslate.com today - would love to get your feedback. Send me a DM if you want a trial API Key

I’m working on that - hope to share something soon

Go to setting. Translation. Choose DeepL. Choose free version. It requisition a API key. Tap get api key, it’ll lead you to the DeepL website. You need to sign up, and get a free API key.

Brilliant

Agree 💯

Tower of Babel in reverse.

#nostr is close enough to the moment when I will be able to post on my native language without gramma mistakes and you all will be able to read it on your side! Thanks for making this happen🫂

I keep auto translate off so I don’t quickly go over the DeepL free tier

Caching was recently implemented so it’ll help a bit with quota usage. Google ML Kit integration for offline translations in Damus will be coming which will give folks an alternative option without limitation. Also exploring some other options. Stay tuned.

Awesome thanks!

DeepL just does not like me. Can’t seem to ever get api key

More options coming soon. I thought this morning about seeding my own translation service. Trade sats for an API key. No KYC, just your pubkey. Proxies to DeepL and caches translations. For use with Nostr clients. Will think on this more. Someone else also approached me this week with a similar idea but uses something else that’s not DeepL. It’ll get better.

Can we use chatGPT?

Yes, will explore ChatGPT for translations.

It’s like 1,000,000x better/more accurate in my testing.

absolute 💯

I think there’s a delay between when you generate it and when it starts working

Jack’s issue is that it doesn’t accept his billing information.

Error with every purchase try

Lol I wonder how many fake Jacks they’re stopping if the real one can’t get through

Launched this today:

https://nokyctranslate.com

Been working on this for a few weeks, should work with any Nostr client that supports libretranslate. Get an API key and pay with bitcoin

Cool.

What does one get when they pay? Dedicated resources? Higher limits? Better translation?

It's an unlimited, pay as you go service right now. As far as I know, there isn't a great option to get high-quality translations without either hosting something yourself or paying with a CC.

This you just prepay some bitcoin and it charges you 0.1 sats per character translated, and you can add more sats whenever you run out.

This my first ever app I've launched so wanted to just get a quick mvp out there and get feedback. #[2]

Fantastic! 🔥🧡

Yep. It’s an incredible feature. Thanks again for building it!

When you spend time in other countries or learn other languages you realise how much English alone excludes you from accessing. Awesome foreign films and media, lots of web based conversations, more diverse local news coverage from people, instead of MSM crap.

Massive feature for sure. Grateful that #[2] and #[3] are leading the way.

I don't know, language is something that has much, much history in itself. I think I would rather ask others to translate iy t for me XD, feels more natural for me.

fantastic point

Does it say that the note has been translated? Might help with things lost in translation and give the reader grounds for a more sympathetic reading

Yes, it does and shows both the original and the translation at the same time.
