Not really. As long as you have the option to backup to your own non-custodial storage and/or to one or many storage providers, that mitigates the risk.

We might need to normalize having Nostr clients support export and import backup functionality — saving to local disk, iCloud, Google Drive, or wherever. Not everyone will run their own personal relay so this might be a good alternative.

There’s some growing obsession from Nostr Japan around Will’s nips and zaps from his April 1 video. What’s happening? 🫣😎

The way to do it is through education, not restriction. The nice thing about Nostr is that you can do whatever you want. But what they do should be an informed decision and the client they use plays a role with informing them.

The semantics are really important and worth explaining, though. For people coming from other social networks where they’re used to verification meaning their government issued identity was checked by a centralized trusted authority, they will initially think that NIP-05 is similar to that but it’s not — I’ve seen this misunderstanding happen many times here already. Anyone can compare, but what it is compared to is different here than with traditional social platforms, and whether the thing you’re comparing to can be trusted matters.

This, except it’s not verification. It’s self-identification. Allows you to share who you are more easily in a human-readable way without a public key. A scammer / impersonator can also follow these steps.
