Just a **hog on a log**, enjoying a trip down the river on a sunny day.

That's fantastic nostr:npub1q3sle0kvfsehgsuexttt3ugjd8xdklxfwwkh559wxckmzddywnws6cd26p !!!

This is an 8x read and 4x write speed gain at 16TB on RAID 10!

Considering SSDs are quite snappy in the first place, what's the bus speed on your Controller?

Anyway, Congrats! I think I'll add this relay once you fire it up if the invite is implicit šŸ––šŸ˜Ž

Fediverse to them means masto, but nevertheless, they'll prolly try to impose their silly rules upon a network of people and services that will just thumb it's nose back at them when they try more of their authoritative, censorial garbage. We're not going to pay them no nevermind or even bother to answer the door if/when they come knocking.

If the EU wants to play in the #Fediverse sandbox, they need to mind their manners and remember that right to pass is revocable by the owners (each and every person and server admin) of the Fediverse - if they do their typical uppity authoritarian crap they'll find out real fast what it means to be told to get fucked, with no recourse to do anything about it.

And that's a good thing!

Oh this may be coming way too late to do you any good, please accept my apologies for not getting back sooner.

There's a lot of inexpensive VPS providers out there, and although I myself feel confident in using many of them, all I can really tell you is do your research with them (intense research), and you can use https://lowendbox.com to assist in that endeavor.

Now, If I'm to name any, it's certainly not going to be DigitalOcean, although you are going to find a quality product/service there.... and it will break the bank. The same goes with most of the others you'll hear of. The same goes for Vultr and most of the other common brands you've probably heard of.

Here's the name I'm going to drop for you - https://Hetzner.de - They're not the cheapest, but it won't break the bank and what you will get is 20TB of traffic per month - that's almost unheard of, and let's say all you need is a litle 5 or 10 dollar box to act as your Wireguard server - that should make even the biggest binge watcher on Netflix happy.

There's one other that I'll mention here, they used to be among the cheapest and offered a lot of OpenVZ machines, suitable for some things, but I don't think they do nowadays. Francisco is the owner of the company and is very proactive and responsive, has a good following and they used to be based almost exclusively in Fremont California in I think Hurricane Electric's facilities but I know since then he's branched out. Good service, communication, and reliability: https://buyvm.net - right now you can get 1GB RAM w/20GB of storage on KVM for $3.50/month. You can also get block storage (suitable for say, your OpenMediaVault server's iSCSI SAN) with 256GB of storage for $1.50/month

I have no hesitation vouching for either one of those providers.

I hope that helps!

I've seen her before, in that movie, **Ghostbusters**, w/Akroyd, Belushi, and others I think.

She wasn't pink then, she was the traditional white w/the little navy boi getup as the **Sta Puff* Marshmallow man.

The DNS isn't a problem, I have several suitable domains and have read a couple of tuts on the Lightning and NIP-05 aspects of that:

[Guide to create Lightning Address redirection on your domain](https://orangepill.dev/bitcoin-guides/guide-to-create-lnaddress-redirection-on-your-domain/)

[Guide to verify your Nostr profile with a NIP-05 identifier on your domain](https://orangepill.dev/nostr-guides/guide-to-verify-nostr-profile-nip05-identifier-with-your-domain/)

### Here's what I'm looking to do, and pls feel free to respond with links and or your recommendations...

* I usually work with XLM, ZEC, and XMR. I only trust non-custodial wallet solutions (I use CEX's, **do not trust regulated **CEX's like binance, coinbase, etc.).

* I'm using nos2x and looking at *Alby*, but I'm looking for a non-custodial wallet solution for Lightning - basically, I do not "trade", I use the cryptocurrencies listed above for day to day retail and wholesale commerce solutions where I sell or buy goods and services - I think **Zaps (SATs) sounds kewl for paywalling articles I publish (and just about everything including candy bars and beer), or anything that includes personal and business transactions for everyday commerce... Just like reaching into my pocket to buy a can of Bang liquid crack containing 300mg caffeine.

Again, satoshiwallet is a custodial wallet and I'm looking for non-custodial wallets - Do they exist and which ones do you recommend for Lightning? Currently I run a couple of non-custodial full chain wallets for Monero (XMR) and Shielded ZEC, and my fav for many years is XLM; so I'm no stranger to cryptocurrency as ***cash money**. I do not *trade* or *speculate* on crypto either.

* Solution: I want to set up a non-custodial lightning wallet solution for myself under one of my domains, use that same domain for my NIP-05 verification (puts me in the nostr directory, right?) and then set up my DNS and Nginx/Apache servers to accommodate those virtualhosts and be done with it so I have my easy to share nostr and Lightning aliases (i.e., joeschmoe@SLD.TLD).

I can use some fav DEX's that I like to swap assets between other cryptocurrencies that I currently use and BTC/SATs/Zaps/whatev without touching any regulated CEX's in the world of *fractional reserve, regulated KYC bullshit*, and be free of the dystopian hand in my pocket bitches.

* Finally it appears that I'm already verified, to some degree - I have a blue checkmark [here at Iris](https://iris.to/tallship), can find myself via [Satellite.Earth too here](https://satellite.earth/@tallship@iris.to), etc., but I'm not convinced that I'm actually NIP-05 registered/verified.

Any advice, suggestions, links, etc., are much appreciated, and I'll be sure to author an article or series of articles for the benefit of the nostr community (free - no paywalls) once I find a, or a few, solutions to this particular requirement.

If there's something I cannot do (say, Lightning with non-custodial vs custodial wallets), or even if I need to run fullchain solutions on a box, this is most particular stumbling block and, well... I guess I'll have to accept that for the time being, but I'm hopeful that whatever services I need to set up and host on the infra in my data center will suffice.

Okay, I'm still new here, relatively speaking, so I'll post the hashtags that I think are expected here at swarmstr.com and be confident that I won't need to go to one of the deprecated, privacy disrepecting silo networks like *Reddit or Serverfault / StackOverflow* for answers... and truth be told, most of my colleagues in the *ActivityPub powered portion of the Fediverse* aren't really amiable to the mission or visionary optimism here in the **nostr* world - so I'm asking the community here :)

I'm hoping that my stated goal here (as an privacy advocate of self-hosted FOSS solutions) is clear, but I'll be more than happy to clarify anything if there are lingering questions, or if I wasn't already clear on the objectives I'm trying to achieve.

One more thing...

* **Damus** is not a solution in this case, as **I am NOT** *a Mac or Apple user* - **Linux and Android please** - I'm a 3 decades long FOSSie, and if you look at my profile, I'm a committed **UNIX** head (xBSD and Linux).

Apologies, if Markdown doesn't work and my post is ugly as a result.

Okay I guess I'm supposed to leave some hashtags now :)

You can say that again, but...

Please don't bother - your words are like concentric rings in a pond once the pebble is dropped into it, and even extremely recent history with the disinformation campaigns against so-called conspiracy theorization that proved to ring true more often than not are empirical evidence that what you say is not just true, but the omen of the as yet not fully realized coming #dystopia.

Those "...hopelessly and intentionally ignorant", will realize that they were the unwitting foot soldiers responsible for exterminating those who advocated for them only after they've discovered the full extent of their unwitting collusion.

Here's something you might be interested in. Most of us believe that moderation is the sole domain and responsibility of the individual participant themselves, as it has utlimately ALWAYS been.

This gives you a leg up where you can use filtering profiles of other people to bootsrap your own - or not, and do your own from scratch :)

I dunno Jack, I'm one of those "Change my mind" sort of folks, or at least, in a 'change my mind' rut.

I should prolly take another look at Bitcoin, coz it just never seemed viable as a currency since mine were given to me via DALnet years ago, and after playing for a bit (no pun intended) tucked them all away on a paper key when they were worth less than 40 cents each.

I've admired and love using one of the oldest cryptocurrencies out there for the longest time - XLM. It's fast as lightning (in my experience, settles in about 3.5 seconds), and is affordable for everyday transactions of virtually ANY size - at an average over the years of 12 cents each, every XLM transaction costs exactly 0.00002 XLM. That's an awful lot of transactions before you reach a penny.

And it's also the international standard (still, if I'm not mistaken), being the official crypto used by MoneyGram worldwide.

To be fair, I haven't looked at the whole Lightning thing, so BTC to me is something that takes at the very least, hours to settle, and can cost $15 or $20 bucks to buy a $1.00 Can of Coca Cola.

Maybe part of my problem is that when I dismiss something, I don't often take the time to go back and look again for a VERY long time - so if enough has happened in the past 10 (or even 5) years to dispell the notions I have about how unwieldy Bitcoin is, I'm all ears and interested in following any rabbit holes that support that.

In the meantime, it's just been too much bother pricewise (transactions) and time-wise (settlement), and if I want to put up with that kind of inconvenience, I can opt instead for a privacy conscious currency such as Shielded ZEC or XMR.

I realize that there may be advantages market-wise, but I don't use anything but non-custodial means of managing my currencies, have no reason to cash out via a CEX, and prefer instead to buy and sell goods, services, in crypto when I can - I do use DEXes, however, when I need to exchange from one currency to another - it may be a tad more costly, but I never touch anything regulated by insisting that there be no comingling of regulated verses non-regulated assets.

Dust has finally settled on the ā€œPrimal censorshipā€ drama. That’s good to see, but I don’t want to sweep this episode under the rug. It is probably appropriate to do a post mortem, assess what has happened and see what we can learn. Let’s make sure that Nostr is a better place after this episode.

Two weeks ago, Primal’s trending algorithm was attacked by bots. The attacker generated hundreds of thousands of reactions, propping his note to the top of our trending feed. At the time, our only defence was a simple ā€œcan’t trendā€ list, so we put the attacker on it. He immediately posted on Nostr, accusing us of censorship, but his note never took off. The attacker then selected a few well liked Nostr accounts and started stuffing the ballot box for them. We saw a bunch of bogus notes with massive bot engagement, so we resorted to the only blunt tool we had. The attacker jumped on the opportunity to publicize the fact that some well liked accounts were being suppressed on Primal and accused us of ā€œshadowbanningā€. The whole thing exploded on Nostr.

What followed was a pretty tough week for Primal. Many of our users turned against us. They took the idea of shadowbanning seriously, as they should. Most feedback was in good spirits, people making fun of Primal via memes. But we also got a fair bit of hate from complete strangers, which was super-weird. All in all, Nostr users were clear about what they think of censorship. This was the Nostr immune system reacting. Being on the receiving end of it really sucked, but still it’s beautiful to see!

The crazy part is that those ā€œshadowbannedā€ accounts were actually perfectly visible throughout the entire Primal site. They had *exactly* the same level of visibility as they do on Damus, Snort, Coracle, and other Nostr clients. They just couldn’t show up in our trending bar. I tried to explain, but there was little room for nuance with the drama in full swing.

So we decided to disengage temporarily, focus on building, and let our product do the talking. We made our trending algorithm more resistant to bots and removed everyone from the ā€œcan’t trendā€ list. We also built a new content moderation system for Nostr, giving complete control to the user. This is our best take on how to do content moderation on such a radically open network. I cover the features and our reasoning in my blog post below.

So Primal is strictly a better product after this episode. But what about Nostr itself?

Attacks can be useful. While they disrupt our systems and really suck for us and our users, they do force us to improve and become more competent at operating in an adversarial environment. However, we should be careful about making it socially acceptable for Nostr devs to attack other projects in broad daylight. That’s not the most productive way to collaborate. It also creates weird vibes which I think we don’t want here. Nostr is in its infancy and the way we act will set the tone for things to come. There is so much to build and we are all working as fast as we can. At Primal we build open source software and run services for Nostr. If you don’t like the way something works, fork it and do your own thing. If you want to contribute, we accept PRs. If you have found a vulnerability, there are multiple good ways to disclose it.

As for Nostr users, I think you all reacted perfectly. Push back hard at any whiff of censorship. When in doubt, mercilessly create memes, point out things that are wrong, and don’t let up. Even if the target is Primal.

If Primal is real, it can stand the pressure. šŸ¤™šŸ’œ

Why push back?

Instead, just categorically dismiss... \m/
