A faithful, regenerative homestead living the dream on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau.

What a lovely tradition. Have not seen it in the U.S.

My little church makes the Advent wreath every year from scratch.

Greens are collected from different homesteads. A handful of ladies gather to assemble the wreath while enjoying eachothers company.

It is stunning in it's simplicity.

A beautiful tradition.

Quiet, foggy morning.

Hoping for some solid rain today after a very dry fall.

Our farm is not hooked up to city water. We rely on our well, water catchment and ponds to take care of all our water needs.

One becomes plugged into nature when they so intimately rely on it.

I use lard from my pastured pork, or raw butter from my milk cow.

A cold and rainy day calls for indoor projects on the farm.

I finally tackled my mullein infused oil making this Mullein Eucalyptus Chest Rub.

Olive oil is infused with mullein leaves and flowers for several weeks. The leaves are strained from the oil. I heat the oil and melt in beeswax. Essential oils are added then it is poured into tins.

I will use it for coughs and congestion and give most away to friends and family.

Here is the recipe: https://thenerdyfarmwife.com/mullein-salve-recipes/

Now you know. If you develop a cough, go grab some leaves, and steep them in hot water. Strain it and add local honey to sweeten. I also like to add lemon and ginger slices.

The leaves are useful for both ends. 😁

I am seeing reports of pneumonia (especially in children). It may be a good time to stock up on mullein.

I use mullein for any lung issues during cold and flu season. It can help with coughs, pneumonia, and asthma.

I have used a tincture of mullein in tea, and have made my own tea from the leaves.

In a world that sells fear, be informed.

You can purchase mullein in health food stores and online.

The amazing thing about this plant: it can be found/foraged in the winter when most other herbs and medicinals have died off.

10 years ago I learned to make broth from a whole chicken carcass.

Last year I learned to pressure can broth to make it shelf stable.

Last week's turkey carcass, turned into broth, made a pot of turkey and wild rice soup, a pot of turkey and dumplings, and 8 quarts of broth for the future.

Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Keep learning and growing.

The sun is welcome comfort after a bitter night.

Goodmorning, Sunshine.

Goodmorning, Fiat Farm.

to make Fire Cider.

I reach for this at the first sign of a cold. Last year the tickles in my throat never developed into colds.

We (my husband 😁) are still sorting the wallet out. Thanks!

The sun is up.

Time for chores.

Good morning! Have a beautiful day.

We convert solar energy via grass eating ruminants into beef, lamb and milk.

The pastoral setting is a bonus.

Ack! My husband and I (actually just my husband 😁) keep trying to figure it out. I'll let him know it's still not working. Thanks!

16 years ago we decided to homeschool our three young boys.

We believed we could educate our children better than the government. (And I believe that we did.)

The choice to homeschool placed us outside the system. Outside the norm.

I think that decision put us on the path to where we (my husband and I) are today - on property in the country, growing our own food, and questioning everything.

It is a good place to be.
