When you say "gossip is removing relays" do you mean the relays on the live page? They only get "removed" if the relay disconnected. Gossip doesn't disconnect. Gossip doesn't go straight away back to relays after they disconnect - if it did, it could get into an infinite loop of disconnecting and connecting. So it gives those relays a 30 second cooldown, and in the mean time looks for other relays to serve the same purpose. A lot of work went into dynamically managing these connections.

Here are a few tweaks you could apply:

Under Relays > Configure, you can set the "Read Rank" very high (e.g. 9) and then that relay will be significantly preferred for people who post to it.

You can also just tick the box in the 'Read' column, although that is only used as a fallback if gossip can't find relays that the person posts to.

Under settings, you can change the number of relays to query per person (I like 2, but you could go higher for more redundancy) and the maximum relays for following (I think this should be very high, right now I use 50, but as nostr decentralizes I will bump it up higher).

Almost all the recent gossip development has been by nostr:npub1hlq93jdtkfg29a8s7fqzzzh82q3pkc20rxucwt4geh6e56wk3y2qxdz5wg with nostr:npub10000003zmk89narqpczy4ff6rnuht2wu05na7kpnh3mak7z2tqzsv8vwqk doing design. Those guys deserve zaps.

I'm going through a "pinch point" where my life is really busy (finishing the house, 3 sets of taxes, too much firewood, truck/insurance issue) but I swear I will get back into gossip development (and other nostr-related things like NIPs and my personal relay idea) as soon as I can and finish the most important things (zaps, syncing settings on the network, media cache expire/etag/etc, inbox feed to include if tagged in content, reposting, finish search, DMs, some kind of key rotation/recovery scheme, way better at-mention UI, plus whatever new NIPs I've missed that are relevant and important)

I was just looking at the prices of riads in Morocco with #[1] yesterday and it only makes sense to have a nostr unconference there next year, it’s super affordable! Way more affordable than Costa Rica, Japan, Hong Kong, etc.

SO MUCH NICER!! And like I said affordable, from the flights to the nightly stays, this specific one on the pic is $100/night like cmon!! If you want people to show up, make it convenient! + Africa needs nostr more than you might think.

In my proposed Mac relay app, I’d like to have it index this type of content and serve it up to standalone apps that know how to serve it. For example, then I could have a Nostr Music app on my phone pulling music from my relay’s indexed music feed and it behaves like Spotify but streams sats if the artist has a wallet.

If you were to wave a magic wand and get whatever "custom feed" you wish, what would it be? Topical like "bitcoin" or "art" are obvious answers, anything else?

You can connect to #nostr on private relays - there is no requirement to connect to a public relay.

BUT your connections, what events you see and who sees the events you post are limited by common relays.

Many people looking at nostr as a twitter replacement would say if you aren't on multiple public relays you aren't on nostr - since you can't communicate with a wide variety of people.

All you need is a key pair, a client and a relay and you can connect to nostr.

If I grant you access and share the private relay I run with you, and that's the only relay we used - it would be great for talking with each other, but impossible for others to follow our conversation and impossible for us to connect to the rest of the world. But we'd still be connected to nostr. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say we're connected via nostr.

This is actually an interesting use case I've been thinking about. Maybe there are some posts I want to share with my local community ONLY and not publish to wide general public relays, but only to a set of relays restricted to a limited purpose with a limited set of users.
