The other day, I overheard someone talking about the benefits of private schools: expert teachers, anglophone curricula (UK, Canada, US, etc.), better students, etc.
This made me wonder how many people walk around believing that private schools are innately superior. Is this something you too believe? Let me throw out a few ideas to get you thinking here.
Your average private school almost certainly maintains better class sizes (say 5-10 or 15-20, depending your school), likely has better maintained facilities, and may even be able to afford more qualified teachers.
Yet, that's often where the improvements end. Don't get me wrong. Those are all great things if you're sending your child to a typical school. Having a better teacher-to-student ratio is important, and having the right resources (books, libraries, laboratories, etc.) can do wonders.
But what about things like curricula? Let's look at the UK curriculum schools that are popular in the Middle East, Asia, and beyond. So many of these schools are locked into the age groupings present in the UK. They're often called Key Stages 1-5. This means that, regardless of ability, students are moved through each grade level from one year to the next. Even if they are lacking in basic skills (language fluency, literacy, maths, etc.), they continue to move up to the next year group, often falling further and further behind.
Likewise, if following the UK curriculum closely, students are getting the same materials, test, and ideologies as most any government school. Even if the school is located on another continent, these same things are given to local students, the same as their UK counterparts. Is that what you want for your child?
Here's yet another reason to ditch your mobile device altogether. I haven't yet managed it, but it sure is tempting at times.

Good thing that's literally impossible on Nostr!
They may be able to get to relay hosts within the EU, but there's always a solution for that!

In education, credentials are seen as something so essential. There are your degrees, your teaching licenses from the State, and all sorts of additional training you can go for.
Naturally, learning about pedagogy can be great, but so many university courses (leading up to your government licenses) are full of theories and, more often than not, ideology. Little time is spent on the practical training of a teacher.
So while someone may have a degree in education or have a license from the State, those credentials don't automatically confer the skills, experience, nor expertise we have come to expect of educators. Those will often come from years of actively teaching in the classroom as well as serious reflection on the part of each teacher.

Thanks for the reminder about dry fasting.
Some time ago, a friend sent me a video by a Canadian health coach named Cole, who recommended dry fasting as well. If I recall, he had quite a bit of experience with it and was even able to go several days without water.
Naturally, that's not something I'd recommend for total newbies, but maybe there are some benefits for those with a bit more discipline and understand the possible risks.
It's the weekend, but your average teacher is probably thinking about lessons for the coming week. What do my students need most? What texts can I find to share with them? What resources do I have and which do I need to find?
Whether we're professional educators or homeschooling parents, being a teacher is oftentimes a 24/7 job.

Learning must start in the family. Parents, you must demonstrate to your children your own love for learning. Show them how much you love computers, Bitcoin, nature, food, culture, and everything else that fascinates you. It will only be natural that they too will want to learn and explore.
Likewise, whether you choose to homeschool or to send your children to an external school, parents must continue to stay involved in the learning process. Don't just ask if there's homework to be done. Ask your kids what they learned today. Ask them to explain this or that concept to you. Help them to develop good study habits and to get organized. Show them where to find the resources they need. As needed, hire tutors.
We can't simply dump the educational responsibility on a homeschool curriculum or a school system. Learning starts and must continue in the home.

Education doesn't always have to be formal. We can and should learn things for fun. One way that I do this is to subscribe to random podcasts.
Normally, a lot of my podcast subscriptions are about Bitcoin, privacy, education, and the like. A few years ago, a colleague recommended 99% invisible, which (as the name suggests) discusses random things in our environment (like walking trails or gas cooking) that we take for granted and have never given much thought to.
https://99percentinvisible.org/
I've enjoyed learning about all the random topics, and it's a nice break from my ordinary podcast content.
How about you? What kind of 'fun' learning content do you enjoy? Any blogs, podcasts, or other content you would recommend to your fellow plebs?

I just got my first scammer messaging me here on Nostr.
He sent me a private message to explain that he's a "senior account manager in Bitcoin mining" and that he only needs me to connect a wallet to his system to start earning money.
Be careful out there, folks. Warn the newbies.

Weren't the Burmese going through some kind of major political turmoil? Has the situation improved? Is it safe to go there now?
For our #Monero #privacy nerds, I did manage to find a decent collection of #XMR wallpapers.
If anyone knows of similar collections for BTC & Nostr, that'd be fantastic.

Can we nuke Chainlink spammers from orbit?

If you're running a relay, can you please stop the word Chainlink from ever being broadcast ever again?
I'm so bloody tired of their spam replies to my notes.
Thank you!
