There are exclusions for low amounts in some regs. There’s just little to no way to hold small, dust amounts of bitcoin yourself. Not a lawyer but there would be a clear upgrade path and threshold, there really isn’t an alternative 🤷🏻♂️
Hosted channels were originally thought of as being custodial all the time, which probably explains why proponents of them went on to build ecash (and why they weren’t taken up much by self-custody wallets)
But I think hosted channels do have a place among LSP assisted self-custody wallets, because simply, you can’t self custody 20 sats of bitcoin.
The biggest benefit of hosted channels is to provide a lightning native experience that upgrades easily to self-custody. An LSP just needs to not broadcast the on-chain txn
The wallet client operates as normal. When you have a big enough balance, you can upgrade.
Hosted just for the period of time you need it. It’s a real path from zap onboarding to full bitcoin ownership.

Core is not the whole ecosystem, because real people will rarely use core directly.
There will always be things in bitcoin to fix, and they are being fixed, but overly focusing on the engine when there isn’t a car is how you start focusing on theoretical problems instead of real ones.

It’s easy with custodial services, but lighting was designed for non-custodial.

Spark is statechains with extra steps. Federations are not worth much unless you’re a member, but then you’re faced with higher interactivity requirements than lightning. In the end, it’s back to custodial trust that can be bent against you.
