Allotmenter, cooker, fermenter, tinkerer ("maker"?), hacker of things and code. Posts will ebb and flow between all these and more. Generalist sorta Software Engineer to pay the rent. From South West Australia, living in England's West Norfolk Fenlands… due to the oddness of life πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ now tied down by an #allotment πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ†πŸŒ½πŸ₯”πŸ₯•πŸ§„πŸ«‘ CW: Can be bit sweary (I speak En.Au), haphazard with CWs, try my best with ALTs. I am here mainly for myself, for my own record - not for boosts, likes, and follows. I don't have money to give away on the internet, so go bark up some other tree.

Anyone able to recommend me a good personal/sole-trader insolvency practitioner?

Anyone got any jobs going spare for decent (IMO) if slightly rusty comp sci background software developers with extensive Linux/Unix network/systems background but also happy on any interesting coding task really? I just like building things.

Anyone know how one gets oneself sectioned?

Computer, define "unhelpful" please?

No, Google, a new way to store and present personal data for targeted advertising is not a "privacy feature". Go away.

Put aside a bit of time to pop down the #allotment this morning, first visit in a week β€” the polytunnel somewhat desperate for water, but thankfully most things have put roots down deep enough to survive the neglect.

I'd love to be able to spend a whole day down here tending it properly, alas it is not possible at the moment. Maybe next season it'll get the time it needs, the time I want to put into it.

Cleaned up the celeriac, pondered the pumpkin patch, and bolstered the bean alley.

A bit of heat and a large pile of leaves is quickly a not-so-large pile of leaves.

On the plus side it's also new shoes day!!

I buy a pair of these Merrell Moabs about once every 2 years, once my 4 year old pair start to totally disintegrate. I'll be bereft of the ever stop making these... been wearing them for over a decade. I struggle to find shoes that fit my short wide feet.

These are going nowhere near wet concrete, for a little while at least.

Today is a cold and flu tablets PLUS ibuprofen kinda day. And a big dose of caffeine (in addition to the cold and flu tablet caffeine).

Got a pub cellar coldstore to start building, and maybe some electrical trunking to install - but first a visit to the allotments of neglect.

Ah, sad times... 😞 vim has been my editor of choice for comfortably over 2 decades. Like most folks coming into Unix programming I tried quite a few editors - bare bones vi at first, pico/nano, emacs, and a few "gui" ones... but vim is where I found my home and we've got along well for quite some time.

It's usually the first package I install on a fresh Linux install (sometimes second after ssh server.)

Most of the day the van's temperature sensor said 12Β°C... it did reach the heady heights of 13Β°C later in the day...

England, your "summer" is broken.

Can I move back to West Oz yet? (No, alas, the answer is no 😞 not yet.)

Anyway... fridgid, it's grey, it's wet... but the little baubles of water on the nasturtiums are very pretty.

Gary Lineker applauds moose stabbing.

"Tackling inflation" is such low hanging fruit that it's fallen on the ground and rotting.

It's pretty much guaranteed that, short of extreme economic collapse, inflation will go down from where it was.

As political promises go it's a bit like promising the sun will rise tomorrow.

What he cannot do is undo the damage done by the period of inflation, the rapid erosion of wage values and worsened basic cost of living.

Based on this Comp Sci was the wrong direction for me given my clear dislike of both math and money πŸ˜…

I should have been a chemical engineer it turns out. Bit late to find that our I guess!

(TBF I was 4 credits points off a math major alongside CS... it's mainly calculus I hated, and calculus hated me. Not actually sure why though.)

Obviously it's just a very silly flowchart of course.

I do often wonder what would have happened if I'd stuck with Civil Eng rather than getting sucked into Comp Sci. Personally I suspect I'd have crashed and burned badly due to my complete lack of attention span and intrinsic nihilism... concrete wasn't for me really. I was just barely able to hold myself together through a CS degree as it was.

nostr:npub1jdlzpp7y4fsg7j2fxy2ase3f0fxqx6xt6768pgna5mssq7yqml8q5cxmue yeah, KISS is a good approach (when it needs to be stable & driven by folks other than yourself especially).

I've got 2 cat6 and two pairs of HDMI and USB cables running from behind the bar to the "IT niche" in the basement where speaker cables terminate and the amp will be located. I think I should try and squeeze an audio cable through there too. Keep all the options open.

Though probably we'll just end up screwing an Android tablet to a wall behind the bar and running an audio cable from it's output jack to the amp. (Often the simple oldschool way of doing something is the most appropriate and least troublesome. But I've got to entertain my desire to over-complicate everything by working out how to put a server into the middle of it.)

Today's side-task was setting up a music service to run with it's audio streamed to a small server machine. For reasons of usability it kinda needs to be a "normal" service with a phone app - so basically Amazon Music, Youtube Music, or Spotify...

Looks like we're stuck with Spotify because despite trying to find ways to make the others work first I've given up, found a way to do it with Spotify (spocon) which "just works". πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

It's a nice sunny evening, I've knocked off work early (for me) but alas am just far too exhausted to do anything much useful. Falling asleep basically, but trying to avoid napping because I expect it'll make my sleep situation even more chaotic than it currently is. I'm going to fail to avoid napping, I know... embrace the chaos. Only think keeping me awake right now is anxiety about not doing productive stuff.

The current Tory war on clean air is all a bit mind-boggling, it's a war in the future too of course... a war on the health and futures of their own children.

And by Tories I mean both UK Conservatives and Labour. Just two different colours of the late stage capitalist disaster train we're stuck on.
