I like to think that my 45 years of reporting on technology and business has left me sceptical rather than cynical but the behaviour of some tech companies is such that sometimes readers might be better served by the latter approach. See my New Zealand telecommunications and tech news website at https://billbennett.co.nz

Tech has had its rubbish side for years. I posted this 13 years ago:

Ten years ago I wrote: Why people won’t try Windows Phone?

If you can't be bothered reading the whole story, it boils down to a mix of 'meh' and people being happy enough with iPhone or Android to not consider alternatives.

Back from the dentist. Three weeks ago I had Covid, which kicked off tooth pain, now I need two extractions and a root canal. Will cost a fortune. Dentist tells me major tooth problems caused by Covid are commonplace.

It's probably breaking yet another unwritten Mastodon law to even think this let alone write it, but if anyone is interested, I’ve a couple of BlueSky invites here. First in gets ‘em.

Perhaps the Commerce Commission could have a look at this? I swear it applies as much, if not more, in New Zealand.

This story was written nine years ago. While it is still true of word processors like Microsoft Word, Google Docs appears to have moved on… eventually.

> Momentum building for school phone bans

I'm in two minds about this.

In my utopia, schools would ban portable surveillance devices, both for people studying *and* working there. They would also supply both with devices for schooltime use, whose hardware, software, and networking fully respect privacy and other universal human rights and freedoms.

But what's more likely, in the short term, is banning the latter, and forcing people to use the former.

If you've got a bit of time to kill, you could set up your own Invidious server. Deploying replacement web apps like this (and Nitter for Titter, scribe.rip for Medium, etc) are a low-risk first step in learning to host your own online services.

nostr:npub1trdnqrfstufc45awha43p6xy2n0v6czuhapzh4r09hap08dg0c6s9gussx Thanks. Years ago I had my own web server, to be honest I was relieved when I could stop doing that.

Is anyone around these parts (I’m in New Zealand, but Australia would qualify) using Invidious? I’m interested of seeing videos without giving data to Google, but notice that all the servers are Northern Hemisphere and wonder if that matters.
