My dwarf tomatoes are sprouting!!

The potato plants are starting to emerge...

Which version of Linux Mint do you like and why?

Privacy is top priority. But I also need reliability. This will be on my main work desktop for creative projects. I am currently using Libre Office, Audacity, and Photoshop (an old 2015 version installed from CD) in Windows. No gaming.

Side note: Also looking for a photo editor similar to Photoshop that does not require a subscription. Just for basic color correction and touch-up of images with paint brush, eraser, clone tool, etc. Adding text occasionally. I am not a huge fan of Gimp, but maybe I just need to customize it?

Gathering a basket of colorful eggs never gets old!

We found a bird nest in the window box of our chicken coop. Can you see it?

Does anyone have any advice for a good email list provider? I started using AWeber with the free service (still getting my feet under me) and they managed to quietly suspend my account. I only found out after I couldn't get any test emails to work, even to myself. My website is over at https://backporchfarmstead.com - I do have a BUYER BEWARE notice, maybe that is too much freedom :-)

I am freedom minded and am using a custom domain with Protonmail. I don't know if this is what got me banned, but maybe it played a part. I asked AWeber to share with me how I got blocked, don't know if they will get back with me or not.

Ideally, I'd like to use an email service starting on a free plan and build my audience up. I'd like to integrate with Wordpress if possible too, but could make that optional. Any good alternatives?

I've been playing around with substack. It's free. It is kinda like a blog, but every entry gets emailed to your subscribers. I'm just not sure if you can import an existing list, or if they have to go and subscribe themselves.

Just got my seed order from the Dwarf Tomato Project. Can't wait to plant them! https://victoryseeds.com/collections/dwarf-tomato-project

I don't know if this is just a Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon or if dwarf tomatoes are extra popular this year, but I have been hearing about them everywhere recently.

They are part of the Open Source Seed Initiative.

The OSSI Pledge - http://osseeds.org - "You have the freedom to use these OSSI-Pledged seeds in any way you choose. In return, you pledge not to restrict others' use of these seeds or their derivatives by patents or other means, and to include this Pledge with any transfer of these seeds or their derivatives."

For now, the pelts are just in the freezer. That is a project for another day!!! I also forgot to mention I have a bunch of rabbits' feet curing in alcohol now, too. We have also dehydrated the ears for dog treats in the past. I wasn't thinking about that this time.

For making rabbit sausage, the meat is so lean I like to add about 20% pork fat, leaf fat preferably. And the seasoning was an organic mix I found online. I just followed the instructions for how much to add. I think it was 4oz of seasoning for 10lbs of sausage.

Why do we raise rabbits? They are relatively easy to care for, don't make any noise, don't smell if properly housed, and they are easy to harvest for food. They could even be grown in a suburban backyard. Grazing only requires a sunny spot of grass about 20ft x 40ft.

Our most recent litter of 6 rabbits gave us 10 lbs of sausage, 4 quarts of bone broth, 6 pelts, and 50+ lbs of fertilizer for the garden.

Time Requirement:

30 days gestation

40 days with their mom

50 days on grass

= 120 days total

(I spent about 15 min a day on animal care plus 2 hours of butchering and another 4-6 hours deboning, grinding, and packaging.)

Inputs:

$40 for 40lbs of organic soy-free rabbit pellets $45 for 100lb bale of Timothy hay

$20 for 15 lbs of organic hard red wheat and a few lbs of clover to spread on the pasture

$10 for ice on butcher day

$17 for sausage casing

$5 for 2 lbs pasture raised pork

$5 for organic seasoning

$8 for vacuum seal bags

= $150 total, not including my time or existing infrastructure like cages, water bottles, and breeder rabbits.

Harvested some pasture-raised protein this week and today I'm making sausage.
