Let's say a person would like to increase their reach on Nostr. How would process be the same or different than increasing reach on other social platforms, such as X?

Hi Odysseus! What brought you to Nostr?

Absolut.

Now that transaction fee storm has passed I'm back to heating my living space primarily with wood in a rocket mass heater instead of Asics.

https://v.nostr.build/Ee2K.mp4

Wood is burned in the small firebox and heat radiates from the barrel warming the space quickly while the fire burns.

As the exhaust gasses make their way to the chimney, they pass through ductwork in a plywood box filled with pea gravel.

The majority of the heat from the exhaust is transfered to the gravel before exiting up the chimney. By the time the gases exit the box, they are cool enough for me to put my hand on the chimney pipe.

After the fire burns out, the heat absorbed by the pea gravel slowly radiates out into the living space until the next fire is burned and the gravel is recharged with heat once again. I built this rocket mass heater for a fraction of the cost of a wood burning insert, with no special tools, materials, or skills.

It has been an unusually warm November and December here at the homestead. Normally we have to start burning wood in the rocket mass heater early November to stay comfortable but this year, the bitcoin mining dehydrator was enough to stay warm and do some food preservation simultaneously.

Transaction fees started climbing and I was shocked to see the most efficient miner I had approaching break even at my electric rate.

I didn't have the circuit to run it wired yet but this bump in fees was the motivation I needed to get the miner hashing. Coincidentally, the weather also started to get colder finally so getting the miner up and running was a win/win.

It successfully kept us and our guests warm through the holidays, even earning some Bitcoin beyond the cost of power at times, all while allowing us to save our firewood.

We did have to fire up the rocket mass heater a handful of times, but so far we've burned less than half the amount of wood compared to previous years. This is thanks to the combination of the warm weather, and high transaction fees allowing us to stay warm with heavily subsidized electric heat.

This might be the first winter we make it through with wood leftover for the next year, typically I'm scrounging for the last couple weeks.

Who needs a boating accident when you can have the sea come to the basement?

I agree, at the moment. But this will have to be the future, to allow for more effective filters for bots and also to keep stuff running long term.

The best part is that everyone can choose. The market will decide.👍

Wow, this was powerful. Ouch. nostr:note1texj5a5m4uf54ryx60yacdkea5lmzq5h2l6cg3wehzt86smx6vtqh9vgqq

I find it fascinating to be an early adopter to the point that there is actually a chance of Jack Dorsey himself reading my comment. I wonder how this will scale when A LOT of people onboard. Just look at Elon's Twitter. Must be impossible to find the needles in the haystack of comments without proper algos.

The lack of ads and bots on Nostr is incredibly refreshing compared to other social apps. I am just waiting for the day when posting has to cost sats, because that would make sense in the long run.

How are you using Nostr in a way you could not with other social networks?

One thing I wish I knew more about before getting into bitcoin and going more public: privacy, opsec, anonymity, etc

My name and face are out there, and my affiliation to nostr:npub1fpcd25q2zg09rp65fglxuhp0acws5qlphpg88un7mdcskygdvgyqfv4sld, various writings, and more.

I’m not saying it’s outright a bad thing, or that I regret it. For many, me using my name and face makes bitcoin more of a real and normal thing for them potentially. But sometimes I do wonder what nostr:npub1fpcd25q2zg09rp65fglxuhp0acws5qlphpg88un7mdcskygdvgyqfv4sld or my involvement in bitcoin would be like if I were totally anonymous. Would I be doing more? More or less impactful? đŸ€”

Ah, well. Better late than never learning about some of these things.

I think anonymity can be a necessary and useful thing to a lot of people, but mostly for operating in a Bitcoin hostile environment or because of legal and political reasons. It has a lot of costs to entertain as well, just look at Gigi đŸ‘œ and Rational Root đŸ„•.

If you want to have leverage in influencing people, it's easier if they recognize you. For better or worse.

I understand a lot of people judge the book by its cover. But being honest with convictions actually builds more respect in the long run. If we all aim for (intellectual) honesty, imagine the conversations we could have.

It was a fascinating episode! I heard the thesis before, but it was well laid out. However, where the fungi insert itself into the food, Bitcoin seems to act more like a host organism that feeds whoever takes care of it.

Have we discovered/created a new life form?

Consider,

Twitter could've implemented lightning tips, or honestly payments of literally any kind YEARS ago. But they didn't. Why?

#Nostr on the other hand has accomplished this in no time, and everyone who has experienced it immediately feels what a big deal this is... but why exactly?

Numerous features implemented in Nostr could've been on Twitter all this time.

‱ Do you think it's because they didn't want to?

‱ Was it too technically difficult, even though Nostriches pulled it off in a matter of days or weeks?

Of course not, it was POLITICALLY infeasible. Remember how Facebook spent *years* and bookoos of capital trying to create a *whole new currency* just to enable it because there was no chance of doing it with dollars? They were even dragged before Congress to explain why they would do such a thing as enable payments on social media! How dare they! It was easily squashed despite the fact that the list of those backing it was essentially a Who's Who of Silicon Valley fintech.

And what did the Twitter Files teach us? That not only would the suffocating regulatory environment make tips and payments on social media virtually impossible, but the political leviathan refused to even allow them to freely TWEET to their followers! Intelligence agencies were both *funding* social censorship & had direct communication channels to shut down people's accounts, shadow ban, & ensure that "unapproved" opinions simply can't travel through the network.

Like @#[0] said, "this has the power to monetize dissent." Consider the insane power of sharing an "unapproved" opinion to millions of people and being directly rewarded with 1000s, maybe 10s of thousands of private, instant payments while the post has unfiltered, free flow to every last user in the network.

No more "donation services" or "patreons" that take 10% and will preemptively shut down anything remotely against the establishment. No more Go fund Me's fuck stealing millions going to protestors to donate to a "charity of their choice." They are all immediately redundant & pointless.

Instead we are walking into a world with unfiltered, free flowing information and unfiltered free flowing money.

The simple fact is that no large, centralized social platform of any kind CAN do what Nostr does so easily. Because they have a gun to their head & they know it.

This is the 10x value add that is going to wake people up, and it's going to start with ALL the dissenters. We need to find all of them and bring them here.

The simple ability to have direct access to millions of followers, and be able receive payments and tips from them directly, unfiltered, untaxed, with no middle man & no authority whatever involved...

They are afraid as FUCK of that power. And they absolutely should be. Think of what a staggering problem the mere existence of someone like Joe Rogan has presented in the past couple of years. Now consider they attacked him through his network, his advertisers, his payment processors, and a huge targeted propaganda campaign (and fucking LOST despite, đŸ€Ł). Now think about the 1000s of others we watched get attacked, banned, deplatformed, canceled, etc...

–––––––––––––

Now imagine the past 3 years done over again, except without any of that being possible anymore...

Guys, we are right in the fucking middle of the revolution. It's right now.
