I was planning to have a diesel generator as a backup in my household in case shit hits the fan.

Problem is, that diesel degenerates over time and has to be replenished frequently. Solution can be that you tank it into car from storage and refill fresh fuel.

But I think I found another solution: propane. It can be stored basically indefinitely and there are electricity generators that runs on both diesel and propane.

Also backup diesel aggregator is on my list. The solar won't help me much in winter if shit hits the fan. But having a diesel storage is hard as you need to refill it basically every 3 months or so as diesel degrades. Not sure if I will be able to cycle it through my car (tank from storage and deplace with new).

Electric heating? Solar wont help you with that. The only system-failure resistant heating is imo the wood stove with good accumulation.

But thats a different story.

For FV to be economical you need to use energy as muchas possible when you have it (in summer).

This means that electric boiler is no brainer, you have hot water for zero* cost ~half of the year.

*Of course the is the aquisition cost (high) of FV + its maintanenece costs (low).

Ouch. This is sub-optimal. The water is the cheapest battery. Plus gas makes you more dependent on the system.

Btw I run my house in island mode if I can most of the time. Because I want to be ready for the grid disconnections. The island mode has some aspects you need to care about (like limit load on the given phase, overloads of the invertor or overheating of the invertor, so you need to know how to use it.
