I watched the first season & 2 episodes of the second. I never read the books but have been disappointed in the show. First season is better than the second fyi.

There is a wavelenght window where the IR spectrum suffers no attenuation from athmosphere. So a satellite based infra red laser is not affected by athmosphere at any distance. As a bonus, IR lasers are also invisible to the naked eye.
