I did that too. Self hosted Snort is fast and works well over VPN. I like Amethyst as well, however I have a recurring issue where it drops everyone’s profile pictures.

FYI tried zapping in several clients and it says invalid lightning address or failed to load invoice.
Pixel series with GrapheneOS or CalyxOS is really the only choice if you want less surveillance. In my opinion, the 6 pro and 7 pro are the only hardware close to iPhone camera quality and overall experience.
I too am a gentleman of a certain age. It’s amusing on a certain level to watch them trying to retain control. I have a GrapheneOS Android and an iPhone that share a number. I flip back and forth for work and fun. I side loaded this so I can keep the Damus experience on iPhone. Unfortunately this isn’t push a button easy, and even if it was, many people wouldn’t bother.
Not unlike Apple trying to maintain their monopoly now and exploiting every last nickel. When the trend is moving towards decentralization, the old guard has no option other than to double down and try to flex. It won’t work.
