Speaking from personal experience, I don’t think I’ve ever really been censored or deplatformed before, but after Bitcoin Bytes was repeatedly kicked off mailing list providers (thanks everyone for the suggestions, we are working on alternatives), I knew firsthand what it felt like.

And this is such a trivial example! Censored for educational Bitcoin content, not even stuff that covers economics and could be twisted into appearing politically relevant, just “boring” technical stuff like BIPs and the parts of Taproot.

Collectively we’re turning these infusions of initial rage into productive energy for building tools and platforms that allow you to become self sovereign and take control of your own destiny.

It would be a mistake to underestimate the impact of this.

Seems to be a lot of deplatfoming going on, especially towards people that already fully understand the need for decentralization, despite coming from backgrounds and countries where they haven’t necessarily experienced censorship before, or at least to the same extent as others.

What those with the power to deplatform fail to realize is cypherphunks can, will, and have been building the alternate technologies needed to prevent this from happening. This wave of targeting will only strengthen the motivations of the builders and accelerate the inevitable.

What are some misconceptions or areas of confusion people have around the Taproot upgrade?

For example, it’s actually three things:

1. Schnorr,

2. Taproot,

3. Tapscript

I was today years old when learned the Taproot part of the upgrade is not just the idea of using Merkle trees (to only revealing spending paths used).

It’s a technique (using a public key and a Merkle tree) to make a coin spendable by either public key OR script. You can’t do any of this without Schnorr, at least not in a way that is remotely reasonable.

I think it’s very confusing that the entire upgrade, the entire package of things, is named after a single feature, even if it is the one that ties everything together into a nice, impressive use case!

There are plenty of interesting things about the Schnorr and Tapscript components, but they are often referred to as general “taproot” in discussion.

Ok but what if I told you I go to Target so much that my 1yo started calling the picture of Chip and Joanna Gaines (Fixer Upper/Magnolia home collection) that he sees there, “Daddy and Mommy” 😆
