At 國立陽明交通大學 National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in #Taiwan 🇹🇼, the Information Services Center prohibits the usage of Chinese tech brands.

Reason: “to prevent unauthorized access and potential leakage of sensitive information, which could pose a risk to national information security”.

Calling someone a ‘conspiracy theorist’ reveals one thing at least: the speaker has nothing more substantive to say.

There are at least as many ways to get dN/dS>1 as there are to get dN/dS<1.

“Type II errors are no less false than type I errors.”

Unpopular view: the term ‘neutral site’ is just fine. It’s a useful shorthand for ‘genome positions at which changes are neutral with respect to fitness’.

After all, sites based on other features can be fractional, say, 2/3 nonsynonymous. Why not neutrals? #evolution

It’s hard to express the joy of returning to your fundamental texts a decade later, surveying the landscape, and ‘seeing the place for the first time’.

‘All’, says #Rilke, ‘is gestation and bringing forth… ripening like the tree… patience is everything!’

We forget so much.

Always good to spend some time with Austin.

“Positive selection is a relative rarity—but of great interest, precisely because it represents a departure from the norm.” #evolution

The #OriginOfCovid matters.

After a tragedy, should authorities throw up the sponge: ‘It already happened, no sense in fussing now’?

No, because the investigative process reveals liabilities; answers help direct preventative efforts; and accountability deters future risk-taking.

Labels like ‘conspiracy theorist’ contribute nothing to meaningful dialogue or truth finding.

People do conspire, in ways great and small.

You find out the truth by finding out the truth. All else is hot air.

‘Taiwan is part of China’ can be understood in two ways:

1. Taiwan currently belongs to China

2. Taiwan should join China

Ambiguity from Chinese imperialists is intentional, because wide acceptance of false claim (1) will make (2) easier to achieve — even as Taiwanese say ‘No’. #Taiwan #China

Living in #Taiwan, I’m reminded each day that something resembling a conspiracy can, in fact, occur.

Taiwan is a country with its own government, passport, and currency. It welcomes Chinese visitors at the international terminal.

Yet #China insists Taiwan is ‘part of’ itself.

One telltale sign that something is amiss: China itself cannot agree on exactly what kind of ‘part’ Taiwan must be.

Sometimes it’s a province; sometimes a territory; sometimes not yet a part; sometimes Chinese Taipei.

Never mind the specifics, just keep the narrative alive?

#COVID19 🦠 | #Taiwan 🇹🇼 | 6月20日

The outbreak remains at a plateau that is expected to last through the end of June.

Currently 253 moderate-severe cases and 30 deaths per day (7-day averages).

79% of cases are Omicron XBB (reinfects after BA.2, BA.5).

My immune system has been notified that #Mpox (monkeypox) is one out of the universe of possible antigens it should prepare a response for.

“It’s all about money. Merck and the rest of Big Pharma just want to hold on to every cent they can, patients be damned.”

There should be presidential debates, COVID debates, vaccine debates. The answer to wrong speech is more speech.

Don’t let the rainbow fool you. #Merck is currently:

1) advocating for multiple doses of #gardasil when one is sufficient

2) promoting #molnupiravir despite its ineffectiveness and risks to both patients and global health

3) suing to block #medicare from negotiating drug prices

View() seems to have a problem in the new #RStudio v2023.06.0+421.

My tibble has 87 columns (ncol). View() normally displays the first 50 but allows shifting over (>, >>). Now, it’s not even registering that more columns exist.

Anyone else having this issue? #RStats
