Passion for freedom tech, including Bitcoin. Linux nerd, with my preferred distro being NixOS. Lover of languages, both natural and artificial, ranging from Japanese, Chinese, Lisp, Haskell, and Rust. I’m also about that ergo mech kb life.

nostr:npub1a2cww4kn9wqte4ry70vyfwqyqvpswksna27rtxd8vty6c74era8sdcw83a good morning! I loved your discussion of scalability on What Bitcoin Did podcast. What are your thoughts on the viability of the fedimints in hostile regulatory environment?

I agree that from the end-user perspective that fedimints are appealing because of your points about surveillance and censorship risks being reduced. I can also see how evidence of reserves paired with neutral third parties within the multisig quorum can be used to mitigate rug risk.

My concern is now for the custodian. The legal and regulatory risk seems too high to be worth it . The threat of being sued by mint participants suggests that an uncle Jim model of running one in your community would require setting up a business entity to shift liability. However, it seems that forming a business entity would open you to legal and regulatory risk from the government.

On the other hand, if the custodian's identity is private even from the mint participants, then liability for the custodian is limited to the extent of their OPSEC. However, now we have reduced the extent of trust that can be conveyed to potential participants since we have removed the "punchability" factor that comes from knowing your community custodian in IRL. Reducing that need for trust gets us to something like a Mercury state chain making fedimint seemingly unworkable in a hostile regulatory environment.

Thanks for the tip about nostr.relay. Do you think it’s worth it at this time to subscribe to paid relays? I was thinking maybe it could boost the signal of my messages to be more likely to find people with similar interests.

Thank you for your response. Part of the problem might be that I mostly follow bitcoiners lol. In my defense, I haven’t found people in my other interest range to follow. As for relay selection, do you know of a resource for relay selection based on interests?

Anyone else having issues accessing Primal wallet? I wanted to send sats to it for zapping but the wallet portion of the app is stuck in a loading loop.

Any advice of making friends on nostr? I feel like I am posting into a void because I don’t tend to get any responses about anything other than bitcoin. My usage of hashtags haven’t seemed to help so I’m wondering if it’s a relay selection issue. Or maybe there just aren’t that many people here interested in mech kb, Nix, fountain pens, or Japanese.

Not really a social media person but the freedom tech aspect of nostr pulled me in, so maybe I’m missing something fundamental.

Using Primal's wallet for receiving zaps for now until I am able to setup a non-custodial solution. So if you like my posts and want to share some love, feel free to zap me!

死は避けられないから、人生も避けない方がいいんでしょう。 人生は辛くても子のように愛して抱いていると、終わる時には次の一歩がどちらでも幸せと思う。

Because death is inevitable, it’s probably best if we don’t avoid life. Even when life is hard, if we love and embrace it like a child, then I think that when the end does come, we will be happy no matter what the next step is.

I feel happy. Inside, I feel at peace.

Instead of attacking myself, I am loving and working with myself. In my life, I finally found my reason for being. I have also found the path to achieving my purpose. In the past, I often thought that it would be good if I died. Now, I am grateful for waking up each day. Thank you, God.

Thank you for this post! Tailscale has been on my radar. Do you have any recommendations for an identity provider to use with it? I’m a bit leery of the default options and curious how if it would be good to self host an identity provider or run from a VPS.

My threat model highly prioritizes the privacy of Bitcoin holdings and mitigating risk of having funds swept from hot wallet running coin joins. I want to use tailscale to securely communicate with my full node from my other devices.

I finished Broken Money!!! It was an amazing book! Highly recommend.

It would also be useful to select the relays to broadcast to when send message rather than sending to all relays. For easy selection, clients would ideally support labeling relays.

This would allow targeted posting to communities.

Another thing that came to mind to avoid relay centralization and both incentivize smaller community focused relays and reducing relay switching friction is tackling issue of finding people.

Normally, the only way to find someone is for you to be on the same relay. People get around this by blasting to as many relays as possible but this doesn’t seem sustainable in terms of storage and bandwidth costs.

Instead could we could blast notes containing only user info, particularly registered relays. The client could query users you follow and auto include relays based on the latest info blasted. When searching for a user you currently don’t follow, the client could include that user’s relays to your list and then you would retrieve messages from the newly added relays.

Paying for relays can help handle the storage and bandwidth increases from blasting user info but it would hopefully be less data and sent less frequently than blasting posts everyone to improve discoverability.

A side feature I would like that is slightly tangential to this is allowing for users via shortref of their pubkey in the same style as git commits. This could enable easier searching of profiles without the potential reduction of privacy that comes from using a NIP 5 address using a hosting service.

This is my second go around for posting a response (lost first draft due to a client issue) so forgive my terseness. Will be happy to elaborate further.

Here are some features that I think could help with communities on nostr. Please let me know if some of these already exist.

- client support for switching focus of posts that only appear on selected relay

- paid relay usage to sustain community and spam control

- ability for relay users to report a person/bot to relay

- ability for relay operator to see list of reported users/bots ranked by most to least reported for better triaging

- Ability for relay operator to kick a user off a relay

- to avoid slippery slope to centralization via shared black lists and create a social norm of forgiveness for one’s past actions, allow kicked off users/bots to rejoin paid node by paying again

- Client support for easy backup of note data and context (eg threads, posts made within a time window of own posts)

- This can be done by connecting to own hosted node

- Could also be a value by enabling cloud backups

- Client would also support rebroadcasting backuped posts

- Relays could use hash based deduplication to ensure above doesn’t blow up storage costs

- Having easy backups allows users to permissionlessly migrate to another community relay in case the previous one becomes tyrannical

- Support easy creation of multiple identities using similar tech to how bitcoin wallet addresses are generated from a master public and private key pair

- This enables having a separate identity per community to improve privacy

- Could also support easy backup of master private key via seed phrase like bitcoin

Thank you for asking this question. I’m excited to hear other people’s responses.

You could also have a special kind for relay advertisements in order to enable discovery of communities from within nostr ecosystem rather than an external website. This type of note could be blasted to many relays. Clients could support clicking a button to auto add relay to your relay list. Storage costs may increase from blasting this type of message but this can be offset by charging to post on relays.

I haven’t had a chance to get zaps setup yet. I want to do it in a self sovereign way and it is taking a bit of doing. I appreciate you being willing to zap me though!

How the monetary system works conceptually and how bitcoin is distinguished from it.

When I initially got into bitcoin, I thought of it as inferior to other cryptocurrencies because of reduced privacy (as compared to zcash and monero) and centralization risk due to need for ASICs for mining (unlike Monero).

I put Bitcoin off for a while until I started listening to podcasts like the Bitcoin Dad podcast that went into the economic arguments for the strength of Bitcoin. Now I see the limitations of bitcoin in terms of reduced privacy and higher barrier to entry for mining as worthwhile trade offs for fixed supply, supply transparency, and settlement security.

I do want to see more innovations in privacy but coin joining and good UTXO hygiene makes privacy possible today albeit with financial cost. As for higher barrier to mining, I am hopeful that just like with general purpose computing hardware, the speed and degree of improvements in ASIC technology will decrease over time as well as cost. This would enable more people to become miners and decentralize mining over time. Stratum v2 is also a promising way to decentralize the mining process while maintaining appropriate economic incentives to keep it sustainable.

This is just facts! I struggled with mental health most of my life due to worrying about what everyone else thinks. Now that I’m moving away from these worries, it feels like my life has just started.

Thanks for posting. This picture prompted me to add “empathy for self and others” to my core values list. I also found the the “First things first” list to be a useful prioritization tool.

Finally, the part in “be proactive” about taking responsibility reminded me of a spiritual teacher named Sadhguru who uses the view of responsibility as “one’s ability to respond” to show responsibility as freedom rather than a liability (eg short hand for who to blame).

Here’s a video of him talking about responsibility.

I can see how leveraging the fiat credit/debt system while holding sats is a sensible approach. Even in the case of a default, your sats cannot be confiscated as long as the private key material remains solely in your possession.

For me, however, I place high value in not being bound to external parties in debt relationships. Dave Ramsey and my personal experiences with consumer financing has shaped my perspective in this regard.

I also believe that I store of value is only as good as your ability to spend it eventually.

Those two reasons shape my desire to fully purchase a home outright using bitcoin and bypass the lending system entirely.
