chronic early adopter of decentralized tech :)

I’ve known how to code for 10 years but have never known how to turn it into a job.

Hobby projects, writing scripts for clients, example code for documentation, guiding developers through implementations… none of this will get you a programming job

Can you ask him how he is managing the custody of all that money? I wouldn’t trust myself to hold business funds in pure self-custody, especially if I had employees to pay.

Would be great if there was some solution to help with that

Has anyone tried using https://val.town for Nostr automations.

Seems like Nostr would be perfect to use with these kinds of little scripts

I was looking for a guide on how to maintain a forked repo like that a couple years ago and never found anything.

Surprising since maintaining a very lightly rebranded repo would be pretty common I bet

Tony, how do you maintain the apps? Do you have to set up special rules that say “pull in updates from Amethyst but exclude changes to these certain files”? Are you manually picking and choosing which commits to accept each time?

Facebook building on ActivityPub reminds of when they built chat on XMPP. Remember how that went?

At some point, decentralized protocols are just a way to quickly bootstrap functionality and have nothing to do with decentralization. nostr:note1zs5kqy4g5v5egq3qte76tgzf4yh6ke5jdj8rdl87g5c8el7e3rhq3zn5hg

They are building the app on the Activity Pub protocol. But to be fair, ActivityPub doesn’t even have account migration tools from server to server. So the experience is essentially centralized with communication federated.

So let’s assume that zaps are for tips. You’re going to be tipping things like newsletters, right?

The problem there is that tips are not a reliable way for a newsletter to operate. If they do it just for fun, sure. But the monthly subscription model came about for a reason (to be able to better predict budget).

Tips to Developers are the same

What else would you tip?

Interesting idea. Kinda like a “super like” on dating apps. Still unclear on what the purpose is however. Is it a way to get someone’s attention more? Like a celebrity?

If you’re buying something or supporting a cause, I still think those things are better done in a different and more clear context

Same reasons nostr:nprofile1qqs9wl0qdh8pvzsr0ytr5jahk6qtu0s2pcwx3hnwdw5vqyf5k3qxfhgpj0260 gave, zaps are more weighty, but also more ambiguous. Of course reactions are often emojis under the hood which does confound things some

One additional reason is that eventually you have a lot of friends online. And it’s awkward to give money to friends often (other than splitting the bill). The better the relationship, the less money is involved, seemingly

The idea that sats would replace likes is really what I find most objectionable.

Likes should be used in custom algorithms. A way to say to your friends “i like this and so might you”.

My friends don’t care how much money I spent on something. If anything they should think less of me for wasting money in such a superfluous way.

Attaching sats to a nostr post is bad UX because 9 out of 10 times the context isn’t clear what you’re actually giving money for.

Donating to a fundraiser?

Paying to support an app developer?

These things should have dedicated pages to do that.

And in the off chance that you’re paying someone because they made a funny or insightful comment… why? I’m sorry but our thoughts are not worth hardly anything. Maybe the “market” has already realized that though

How do users really know if a relay is good or not? What makes it good vs not good? Apps don’t show us info that would make us informed on the matter

For better or worse, “snapchat” is not a “person” in the minds of users. So no “one” can see the pic once it’s gone. That is perfectly fine for most people.

Privacy between users is more important than privacy between user and server for most people.
