In essence - you must incentivise your open source code to get forked - or get bundled ..

The way you do it is simple - either charge for your GUI .. or don't ever build a GUI 😜

The only measure of success for "open source software" is how many times your repo got forked - or how many others bundled your software ! Or subscribed to solution philosophy ( mostly protocol)

Reason is simple - people who bundle your software are your real customers - they would respect and pay for your time .

Case(s) in point :

- Linux is successful open source project because kernel is basis for thousands of distros ..most donations to the foundation come from distros (or corporate clients of distros ) ..

- #bitcoin is successful because thousands of shitcoins copied its solution - that is the reason #satoshi has 50 billion in his wallet - she may never use it but she is super rich and super successful.

Making money is NOT a bad idea ..

a pro model where I pay say 1000 sats per month for unlimited notes and comments .

It is important :

- It helps dev ecosystem. New clients' devs see a path to monetization. In a way , users are incentivised to try out new clients ..

- If you ( as a user ) are willing to spend time on new clients - you invest your time to help testing / ideation . You get free #nostr but you know free is NOT an ultimate solution. Paying for software is a habit - a good one !

- If software is free , perverted means to support dev are bound to percolate - pesky ads :-) are probably the least of your concerns ..

As for #apple nostr developers (read #Damus) .. if you are NOT charging for your software ( open source or not ) , you are probably culturally misaligned :-) .. you should move to Android / windows .. pun intended :-)

PS - I don't use apple software - hardware is a different thing - love it !
