I recommend XMPP for lightweight server with minimal state, or Matrix which has server side logging (and extensive server side state that entails). Both of these are easily bridged to telco for your friends in 20th century countries.

Any protocol that requires a "sign up" should be ignored (it is actually a proprietary service). If it becomes a business necessity, hire a bridge service.

Signal is not secure. Just ditch it. There are too many open and secure messaging/voice protocols that do not use telco (except via bridge services) already. There are even proprietary Big Tech things like Teams™ (use Matrix instead, there is even a bridge).

There are many bridge services from telco to digital federated voice/messaging. I use diamondcard.us for SIP and jmp.chat for XMPP. jmp.chat also does SIP and Matrix.

The Alby service is invite only. Like you, they recommend running your own lightning leaf node, and connecting to their service. That may be the way to go, as the uptime and network requirements are only what you need.

That's "easy". For non seed keys, use a different type, and encrypt the non-seed key under the seed key (and store it). You could do that for seed keys as well to have only a single type.

It would be nice if the reply count separated people you follow from unknown npubs. It is annoying to see replies, anticipate meeting new people online, and click - only to see another spam. Maybe I'm not using the reputation cut off properly. I notice many of the spams have -4, -5 reputation.
