Some thoughts / observations out of Nashville
MINING TAKES CENTER STAGE. CONSUMER LAYER IS SCARCE.
Since I refused to spend hours in line or submit myself to unnecessary deep security screening, I hung out in the pit the whole time. Honestly, based on the pit, this felt like a mining conference, like Scott Offord’s Mining Conf level of mining focus. All the major minors were there with huge set ups and mining shipping container / rig demos. The mining stuff just DOMINATED the pit, especially when you add in the yield / staking / cloud mining scams that were also out in full force and marketed themselves and mining adjacent. Suits were EVERYWHERE and all the mining companies seemed to have people there whose job it was to give the hard, fully-credentialized sell of “mining companies as exciting investable assets.”
In itself that was not a problem, mining is ESSENTIAL to bitcoin and the industry having a glow up moment is something we should all celebrate. What felt lacking in the pit has that companies representing consumer tools / services were almost COMPLETELY NON EXISTENT in terms of booth presence. No Cash App, no Swan, no Bullish, no Bitpay, no Bitwage, no Bitrefill, no Fold, no Lolli, no Foundation, no Coinkite, No Blockstream, no mechanical bull, NOT A SINGLE reputable Lightning wallet, shit even Coinbase and Binance were fully ghost. This gap was filled by Bitcoin L2 staking / defi scams replete with booth babes who were clearly Chinese and Russian kompromat agents. Bad look all around.
For someone like me, this gap was glaring and sucked a lot of the fun out of the room. Many of these companies certainly had people or teams around at the conference but there seemed to be basically ZERO pull interest for retail - which is pretty dark IMO if the “Biggest and Most Important Bitcoin Conference Ever” has completely abandoned retail, at least at a vibe level.
Even if the ETF pushes the convo in an institutional and “financial advisor managed” onboarding direction, we as bitcoiners CANNOT leave it at that. We should view ETFs as a potential starting point for the next wave of retail but not the END POINT. There are surely main people who will buy into the ETF who will have interest in self custody, or something closer to it, if we are there to educate them.

Some thoughts / observations out of Nashville
HEADLINERS MORE TROUBLE THAN THEY ARE WORTH
The addition of Trump and Kennedy added the very visible presence of heavily kitted state jackboots. The resident spooks, bootlickers, and jingoists in our midst may have loved this and felt like it was a throbbing, thick veined expression of American Strength™️ To me it was a little strange, like aren’t these the same guy that’ll tear gas you and kick in protestors heads and shoot your dog and sTeP oN yOuR sNeK and such? Anyways, if I had a security kink, I would have just stayed in Beijing…
Also this created an annoying physical barrier to a lot of the content. I consider myself a RealBitcoiner™️ so of course I said f*ck that and just hung out in the pit. I feel like the structure this year and the hours long security gating it required catered only to newcoiners and tourists and hero worshippers - all of whom don’t understand that if nothing else, the social layer of bitcoining rest immovably atop huitzilopochtli’s wheel, a constant and unending cycle of seeing your hero’s slain in near sport-like public spectacle fashion.
Hopefully next years conference will have less high profile politicians or people requiring heavy security (since it will be off cycle so they’ll have no incentive to pretend that we are some new and coveted voting block - which I’m not AT ALL convinced that we are). And even if it does, with 2025 planned for Vegas, if the main stage is rekt then just go gamble or chill at a pool somewhere with your homies.

2/3 of the pit is Mining companies (which is great, though one can tell that many of the smaller ones are weird or scammy). The other 1/3 of companies appear to L2 shitcoinery.
Consumer payments / products layer seems very thin this year. No Cash App, no Swan, no Bitwage, no Bitpay, no Blockstream, no Foundation, not even Coinbase or Binance. No mechanical bull and other social gimmicks with prizes and stuff.
That said the gallery is dope (and should be bigger)

Bitcoin Conf in Vegas next year? 😂
I don’t think this is bitcoin doing this. I think it’s more of our times and the zeitgeist. People seeks heroes and singular leaders as anchors in times of high urgency change and uncertainty.
Bitcoin encourages us to think and act for ourselves but as humans we are still social creatures and so within the Bitcoin community itself you still find bell curves of individualism vs communitarian alignment as well as libertarian vs authoritarian alignment.
So for better or worse hero worship will always be with us. It’s a human thing.
