I wouldn't worry about it, they are paying a lot in hard money for dumb pictures. It's unsustainable for them and increases security for bitcoin. A passing fad. The ability to do this in bitcoin has been around for years, nothing new is happening.

In ~2007 I started with CERNs grid project where the idea was your cpu was helping a supercomputer store very large numbers, so in a way your computer became a variable in a very large or complex equation. I installed software that allowed the supercomputer to access some CPU cycles and memory space to help them map particle collisions. The principles behind bitcoin were not too different from that and when I heard about a 'coin' being rewarded to a friend of mine for allocating CPU time to a protocol I jumped on board and started mining on a 2005 Sony Viao laptop sometime in December of 2009.
Bitcoin wasn't released by the Fed or any other controlled group. It was given to people to do with as they wish. If people want to be controlled they will be, but more people will opt for freedom.
