A redeemed πŸ™ and insatiably curious woman on the home front 🏑 Author and clinical herbalist in the PNW 🌲

"Some families feel compelled to join up with the public school system in a β€œpartnership”, in order to get extra funds for computers, music lessons, and the like. I would strongly discourage this. Not only do you lose your status as an independent homeschooler (your child becomes, basically, a public school student, working from home), but it puts at risk the opportunity for others in the future to homeschool. Should the Lord agree that music lessons are what your child needs, I have full faith that He would provide the means for you to procure them, outside of governmental β€œhelp”. Be well advised that public schools embark in this sort of partnership not for the good of your child, but for the federal money in their accounts and the educational control you would begin to relinquish."

"We fill the hands and nurseries of our children with all manner of dolls, drums and horses, withdrawing their eyes from the plain face and suffixing objects of nature, the sun and moon, the animals, the water and stones which should be their toys."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is my daughter. She's one heck of a hiker. Let (or make) your kids go outside.

"Most children are run through the public system as if he or she is college-bound to inevitably work a lifetime for a corporation. That system fails the children that are more gifted or eager to work with their hands in a trade, create artwork of some kind, or coax food from the ground. Because our society thrives when people fulfill their own innate talents and bents for the good of others, it doesn’t make the education a future CEO needs inherently worth more than the training for rug weaving. And making more money isn’t the best indicator of happiness, which is, most parents say, what they want more than anything else for their children: to be happy."

Thank goodness I was never sent to school; it would have rubbed off some of the originality.

Lovely day out with friends, ferries, coffee (otherwise known as a "white pumpkin" cold brew), Mexican food, and a little shopping. I haaaaaate shopping, so "a little" was enough, but I was happy to have my friends help me pick out a pair of new glasses. Six years between glasses is a little long (did I mention how much I hate shopping?

Thank you! It was super rich. I was ready for a good plate of nachos (SALT) afterwards πŸ˜‚

Baked up a flourless chocolate cake (with olive oil and ground almonds) topped with a little rose sugar and petals. I'll be making a tea with rose congou, which is so lovely. Rose is such a beautiful herb to bake and drink (and bathe in!).

Do you ever just sit with your barefeet on the ground grateful for all you have while taking deep breaths of fresh air and lifting up your chin to the sunshine?

From ch 6, on being "qualified" to teach your own child(ren):

"Qualifying to teach our own children is not a matter of educational attainments, licensure, or experience. And it is most certainly not a matter of permission. The deeper issue at the root is authority. The question we need to ask ourselves is, where is the responsibility for the child’s wellbeing and education supposed to reside? When a couple conceives a child, who has the authority--the right--to choose where the child lives or what the child wears and eats? God in His wisdom ordained both a mother and father to raise up the next generation in the context of a lifelong covenantal commitment (again, not as a β€œmarriage” understood by the state). In a rational world, this makes sense. The baby knows and belongs to his or her mother and father. Only in a broken world does the mother have the ultimate right to abort her child, but not to raise him or her up once the birth day occurs. Once the child is born, the social security number is issued and suddenly he or she is a matter of state concern."
