We installed the automatic chicken door yesterday, and I'm wondering why we hadn't done it before. We have a weekend trip planned in a couple weeks, and the animals is something that we worry about. So we have a family member that will come check everything morning and evening, although all the critters should have enough food and water. This door makes us feel more comfortable leaving, because if something happens and our sitter cant come, we know the chickens will be ok. Last night and this morning was the first test of it. The evening closing of door was perfect, but I think I will set a different time for the morning opening. Our chickens get antsy to come out in the mornings. We opted for the battery operated version instead of solar panel because I didnt want to worry about adequate sunshine. So far we're loving it. #grownostr #chickens #homesteading #countrylife

Time 100+ I’ve realized I probably should have gone to trade school rather than college

At least I had ideas about what I’d do with my degree, unlike a lot of college kids… When plans derailed and things changed, though, I had a lot to figure out, and actually none of my plans were thought through well enough.

That’s something I’ll try to do better with my own kids — make sure they’re intentional about their education choices and know what exactly it will take to reach their goals.

Yesterday was my baby shower, which was potluck, and my mother in law made one of her tasty farro salads with apple, cranberry, chickpeas, nuts, and butternut squash.

There were some leftovers and I figured they’d be good stir fried in the pan next to my morning egg, and I was right! This was delicious. I’m glad I have a bunch of this still left over for future mornings.

Polyface Farms egg with harissa was delicious, too!

Shelled a few gallons of local cowpeas that one of my elderly friends has been saving all his life (I grew these).

This pea is an heirloom to this era dating back to pre-civil war times. It’s extremely well adapted to my climate, nothing else grows like it here. I get massive amounts of food from it.

These things do not survive if new generations do not save them. This pea was a few seeds away from extinction at least twice already. These are precious things, many have been lost already.

Human civilizations cannot survive if we do not have resilient food systems.

We finally have real money. We need real food & medicine. The money will mean nothing if you have nothing to eat.

Go talk to the old man/lady with the garden, he/she might be saving something that’s absolutely priceless for your community resilience. If you don’t act soon it could be gone forever

Friends are coming down from Canada to look at what we’ve done, and ask us questions about living hardcore off grid.

It has me in a “what would i have done differently” phase. Im writing it down. it feels great to write it out. some of the answers are surprising me.

After doing a spore print of a parasol mushroom, and a bit of workbook time we are starting our course on #hydroponics.
