I think it’s the depth and detail contained in the historical aspect of the universe created. Tolkien’s LOTR books focus on a section of history that takes place after so much detail and context has already been built - over thousands of years. So the world feels more real and believable as a result.

My favourite translation of this is in The Message:

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. I would start by reading the gospels. I’d recommend The Message version as it uses earthy, modern language (while still being accurate).

I’d pray - reaching out into the void as if there might be something/someone else out there waiting for you. Ask Jesus to reveal himself to you - to answer or speak to something deep in you no one else is aware of - and in a way you understand.

I’d also look at reading a book called The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel.

As a side note… many people I know (myself included) have had the most powerful, life-changing encounters with Jesus / the Holy Spirit when we’re at our lowest point. Where the ego etc has been crushed and we feel empty of ourselves, strength etc. If you feel you have everything together, have your strength and health intact and are completely self-reliant - you’ll find it harder to be in a place where you can find and receive him. That’s not to say it can’t happen… but I think it’s harder - from my experience anyway.

I’ll be praying for you though - and hopefully others here will too - that you find him and you experience the life changing, and life-giving power that I and many others experience on a daily basis.

I agree with the idea of personal accountability/ responsibility/ ownership etc.

But I think the idea falls down in a situation for instance where a child is sexually abused. Is that somehow “by their own design”?

Some terrible things do happen in life that are outside of our control. Others can commit morally evil acts against us, stand in our way, oppress / abuse us.

Acknowledging that is very important - I don’t think it’s healthy to deny it. But you can still overcome the pain, rise above it / become successful and refuse to see yourself as a victim despite that. You can also find healing and receive the power to forgive those people via the person of Yeshua.
