A few days ago I had to go to Rome, the once glorious capital of Italy. When I travel, I always like to observe people in the streets, to get the "mood" of a place. Italy is in desperate condition, suffucated by one of the worst bloodthirsty beaurocracies ever inflicted upon mankind, so it was not a surprise to see the worried faces around me, people trying to make the day but more and more desperate. The same faces I see all over Italy, more or less. Yet Rome is the home of most of the parasites "working" for the state, and it was shocking to realize how easy it is to spot them! They go around with the relaxed faces of slave masters, probably trusting that the criminal gang for which they work (or which they control) will promptly kill everybody else before it cuimbles to the trash bin where it belongs, leaving them alone and naked in the dark. And they look so "righteous", so proud! Like the harsh reality of the devastation caused by the state was not in fact reality but a temporary nuisance, possibly even a fantasy. They seem to live in a separate world, an ivory tower where they can pretend that everything is alright and wonder why everybody else is complaining, while at the same time they contribute to the distruction, every day. Why, the state provides (with stolen money)! How can they sleep at night?
I guess the ancient Roman elites felt the same just before the empire crumbled under their feet (and for the same reasons).
I just hope to see this new, uglier empire crumble too.
It is about time.
