Any thoughts on Pinstr? I tried exploring it but had some issues with the user experience.
Disclaimer: I was trying to figure out how to use Alby to connect to it without logging in directly with my npub and admit I still haven't wrapped my head around how to do this very well, and may not have done it right, so that could account for my difficulties.

Are we talking first century church? Because if so I am pretty sure it's original sin was not a preoccupation with weilding the sword of the state. That would come later.
You can use a YouTube proxy like piped.video or the NewPipe app.
Vimeo is more geared towards film makers.
There is flare.pub built on Nostr but it is still a young project.
Otherwise the "best" alternatives that I know of are the two you mention. I did a deep dive a couple years ago into alternatives and at that time found very little else that came close to YouTube in terms of content or user experience.
If neo-western counts, The Highwaymen on Netflix is excellent.
I'm no authority on the subject but find that if used as a supplement and not a replacement it can be helpful. Most on the market are junk though. Two I have used that are decent: FNX Protein and Levels Protein.

Look into Blixt in addition to some of the other suggestions. It is young and I haven't experimented with it a lot yet but it seems promising.
Not ideal but numerous people on that team have ties to government, elite schools, or Silicon Valley.
What better options are there for email? Skiff isn't good anymore from what I remember and pretty much everything else is Big Tech /not E2EE.
Signal and Tor both have deep connections with military intelligence but lots of people still rely on them.
We have to use the best (or best of the worst) of what we have available while we build better alternatives.
As a general rule I try to ask a lot of question. Honest questions, not trap questions. And the aim is to win the man, not the argument. Sometimes that is the person with whom you disagree. Sometimes it is the hearts and minds of the onlookers.
