In Plato's own time, the term "idiot" (idiōtēs) referred to a person who was concerned with his own private affairs or self-interest above the public good.

Therefore it is shameful for a man to be conquered by self because he becomes an idiot, unable or unwilling to master his own passions.

Pretty sure he votes Republican, but that's not exacrly the same thing. Probably a political conservative. Might be fiscally conservative or libertarian. Doesn't strike me as a strong moral conservative.
