As someone who left California after 30 years to move my software business to North Carolina, I understand why companies want to do this. I also imagine that many of the employees who will leave California to get work in these new red states will probably bring their voting tendencies with them. Thus causing the state that they are just moving to, to become just as hostile for business as the one they moved from. There is much to miss in California (weather, friends, etc). But North Carolina has much of those benefits (if you can ignore mosquitoes and hurricanes) without the BS that is going on in California politics.
It seems as though the deer were having a beach party last night. Based on what I found nearby I wonder if they're plotting something and us humans need to watch out

Gonna have some wind the next couple of days. Too hard to listen to my books on tape when the wind is blowing on my headphones, so sheltering hikes in the woods it is.

Using noStrudel and not seeing the image description. I would guess chives. NOTE: on green onions (scallions), if I buy them from the store, I use all except maybe an inch or two from the roots and then plant. they will keep growing forever and just keep trimming them. No waste.
Great morning for a stroll. I wanted to see a little different scenery today so I went up to Avon. Very warm temperatures with a south wind. Small swell but looks like it could be fun with a longboard. It seems as though winter is over and I have a feeling we're going to have a very warm summer.

Do you just place the tablets whole or do you crumble them?
I'm trying it for the first time this year, but nostr:npub15879mltlln6k8jy32k6xvagmtqx3zhsndchcey8gjyectwldk88sq5kv0n swears by it on his podcast.
He described his method on a recent episode as: One pill in each cell of his six-packs when starting seeds, or three if he's using something like solo cup-sized. Three weeks later he puts one more in the soil next to the plant. He then throws three more in the hole when he transplants.
He said he still gets blight, but the plants survive. He thinks the soil in that area is improving every year because of it.
I'll check it out. I heard him mention it on one of the podcasts, but then lost my place on the podcast and couldnt find it again. Thanks for the info
Has anyone used aspirin when growing tomatoes? If so, how did you apply it and what were the results?
Thanks in advance!

A beautiful morning for a ruck and watch the sunrise. Light wind out of the South. Comfortable temperature. I can't wait for earlier mornings when the sun's up so I can have more time to either surf or go prone paddling.

after the media scaring us with solar flares, "cyber" attacks, etc. It comes down to what I figured all along (incompetence). We also depend too much on the internet. Simple DNS problems, natural disasters, or even governments can bring down all communications.

Angry ocean with two currents converging at the point. Overcast day with wind out of the Southwest. Air temperature is perfect for a hike on the beach

Feel free to contact me with questions. Check to see if you have a local group who manages a repeater. If there is a repeater, you can probably start with a cheapo Baofeng for around $40. I have a handful. great to have when doing work around the yard (call my wife on the radio asking for a tool or something), but better if you have a repeater where you can talk to others from further distances (because the repeater takes your signal and then boosts and sends out to a wider area). NOTE: to be legal, you need a license. Other hams might not like you if you transmit without a license. But it might be worth it just to meet others.
I have a lot of different radios. It comes down to what you are looking for. For real comms, an HF rig is preferable. They are expensive. But, we have had many outages where fiber is cut to our island and cellular, landline, internet, and 911 is all down. I can then use an HF rig, laptop or android, and software called winlink, and email anyone. I have done this multiple times over the last year since we have had so many outages. But again, it is very expensive. An HF rig can reach further than a little handheld. A handheld isnt much use unless you have repeaters in your area. So, the answer is complicated and hard to answer in a nostr response 😉
While a good chunk of America can't communicate through their handheld devices, I am sending messages from mine that are reaching others from all over the world using ham radio and APRS for #aprsthursday. Sent out two different messages from 2 different radio setups. First was from a pc connected via bluetooth to a Mobilinkd TNC3 and Baofeng cheapo radio (radio on the right with bluetooth dongle). The other was straight from a Yaesu FT2D radio (no PC involved -- radio on the left).

There are some decent waves in Frisco. I wish I had time to try to paddle out.

it worked great. in 1990, I lived in California and my brother lived in Maryland. His roommate had a fidonet node. I could connect to a local number in Los Angeles and be able to send files and emails to my brother living in College Park, MD. might take a day or two to get the message out, but worked great!
I've been thinking about distributed, rag tag tech solutions for decades, but theyve been in sharp focus the past few weeks and days in particular.
I'm imagining a community of people who each run some services which will be down some of the time, but you always want everyone to be able to use everything all the time.
At first I was thinking load balancers, round robin DNS, failover... you know, the tried and true solutions. But those all have huge problems in this type of environment.
Then it hit me. Go back to computing in the 80s and 90s, where it was expected that people and even servers would be offline regularly. Take inspiration from BBSes, email, and the more modern systems like git, RSS (with auto-downloading).
#Nostr is designed along these same lines too. Nostr clients don't let you post while offline like you can send an email while offline, but that's just a client implementation decision.
Effectively, the point is to make things work well offline.
This strategy doesn't work well for some things like real time communications (video teleconferencing, voice calls, etc.) or when multiple people make changes to the same file at the same time. So we need different solutions there.
That could be a low-tech solution like scheduling a meeting on a meet.jit.si server but if that's down then falling back to https://vc.autistici.org/ You could have a tertiary option if needed, or even more.
Reminds me of Fido BBS from the late 80's early 90's. How it hop-scotches from one local call to another to avoid long distance calls when sending messages.
Another windy day out of the north, so the woods it is again. Very pleasant back there.
