7 days ago, the water in our creek (that feeds out to the Pamlico Sound) was well in the 60's. This latest NE blow has really chilled things down. Briefly today, it went below 50 degrees. Brrrrr. But, because the sound is so shallow, it can change temperatures quickly with a bit of sun and warm temperatures. Though, our creek is a bit sheltered, shadowed, and a little deeper, so it is normally a few degrees cooler than the main body of the Sound.

our National weather service rain gauge shows we got 0.56" as of 7:30am yesterday. and another 2.37" as of 7:30am this morning. Our digital weather station shows we got 2.24" during this event. The wind is going to be blowing all through today and into tomorrow from the north. Temperatures drastically dropped into the low 40s. I refuse to wear long pants, I am in shorts until Christmas!

A shot of our backyard vertical #hydroponic towers from 7 years ago (the last season before we got the heck out of California). We had so much arugula and mustard greens. Managing PH was key to success for growing in CA -- rainwater was very acidic there. I am about to get things started here. We haven't been as successful growing outdoors in this salty and windy environment here on Hatteras Island, NC. But, we get so much more out per sq. foot than we do with just dirt.

We gave become an official weather observer for NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). Someone from the National Weather Service dropped off the rain gauge last week and installed it out in our back yard. We will get the thermometer sometime soon. But today was a big event, in the 4 days we have had this on the property, we got our first reading. 0.02 inches of drizzle accumulated 😁🌧️ I finally got to put a number in the system.

After a month of my temperature sensor, for our dock, being down, I finally rebuilt it. New board and new circuit. After a couple of hours of debugging, I couldn't get the sensor to work. Replaces the sensor, traced for shorts, and still no go. Finally, I looked at a resistor under normal light. Apparently, the third stripe on the resistor appeared red instead of the orange it was. As many of you probably would have pointed out to me, 47k ohm is very different than the 4.7k ohm it should have been. Dolt! Time to replace my 20 year old fluorescent bench lamp with something with truer colors!

For sure. I have a few of these and just setup the first one. While I went out with a measuring tape before purchasing, and did the math on cubic feet of soil, you just dont realize until you get it installed. I filled the bottom of it with wood, then filled the rest with soil. Still a lot of soil.

I ended up buying 3 of these. One we have already assembled and getting it ready (wood in the bottom, then filled the rest of the way with garden soil. The second one, we are going to just do 2 of the side panels in length to make it a shorter version that will fit a specific place in our yard. I havent figured out what to do with the 3rd one yet. I dont know how long these will last in our environment. We live on a barrier island. But we will see.

After so many days of wind, it is nice to have such a beautiful morning. Ramp 43 is flooded, so rucked lighthouse beach at first jetty. Light west wind. Air temp in upper 40s and water temp in low 50s. Not much surf.

The wind storm we had here on Hatteras Island caused some minor sound side flooding. The west wind pushes against the back of the island and brings in water with it. We had water levels 2' above normal. second time in 2024. It has been a while since we had this. We have had it happen 4 times in the last 6 years. During Hurricane Dorian, then again during a January storm in 2020. And then 2 times this year in the last few weeks.

it would proabaly work well. We were thinking of even using one as a dog pen for our little dachshund. on rhis one, I filled it half way with junk wood and dead pepper plants from lsst years season. then topped it off with soil. Still have to get more soil. 8x4x2 can really add up in volume

Spent this morning putting together a 4X8X2' raised garden. The thing had 138 bolts to hold it together. I bought 2 others, but they will have to effing wait untill next week, it took Kate and me a couple of hours to get one together. And no matter how much math you put into it, you never have enough soil because of settling, etc. Well, at least it is too high for the dog to get into it to dig.
