nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 made a push for making relays front-and-center and insisted that this needed to be nostr direction and paid out bounties for things like 'seen on' information.
IMHO for general microblogging relays are invisible. For DMs too. Nobody cares about the relays when you are just conversing deep down in some thread.
But for other apps (relay-centric chat, browing relay-specific feeds) the relays have to be known to the user. This is like a web browser: the URL is not invisible, the user goes to the URL they want to see.
So it very much depends on the nostr app in question.
In the context of this thread though, relays cannot be invisible. People have to choose their relays, often making decisions like "should I pay for service here", "is this relay reputable", "what does my son recomend as the best relay".

Here's my untechnical view, thinking of grandma (my mom): if her presence and those like her and others with low interest in what's under the hood, relays are going to have to go underground. Hidden. Out of the way. It's the (or one of the) barriers to onboarding most people.

The early TiddlyWiki had a fantastic one. These days, FreeFeed and SeenThis have quite good ones for online posting, as does QOwnNotes for saving selected text to a file within it. I never got Obsidian's to work and Capacities changed, it seems, from saving the full selected to text to only a portion.
I mean no malice when I say this: more and more, it seems to me that part of the draw of the 'spiritual, not religious' _religion_ is that one can believe whatever one wants, from day to day, without being held accountable to _any_ higher authority whatsoever. "We _cannot_ know the truth" is held with as much certainty as "but we know it's _not Christianity_!" Railing against 'absolute, exclusive truth claims,' and yet operating on one just the same.
I cannot think of any more eternally dangerous advice than "look within." A ship tossed in a stormy sea needs an _anchor_ that is well-weighted, _outside_ of itself, and on solid ground. We have an anchor for the soul, a _forerunner_, already well-fixed in the presence of God, in Christ Jesus ([Hebrews 2](https://esv.org/Heb+2) ). I _have_ looked within, and it looked strangely similar to Lazarus' tomb before the life-granting call of Christ: dark, diseased, full of death and decay.
Some ideas have _eternal_ consequences. Don't navigate the storm by following a _wandering planet_ but, instead, fix your eye on the unmoving, and immovable, North Star.
