At the conference, RFK Jr said he hoped Trump would announce a plan to "buy" Bitcoin for a national reserve.

What Trump ended up saying about the national reserve was "never sell your Bitcoin."

Neither of them said "exchanging currency" instead of "buying" or "selling."

They both used terms like "valuation" instead of "exchange rate." Politicians cannot fathom fully recognizing the legitimacy of cryptocurrency. Their system would fall apart.

What neither of these politicians can deny is the strength of Bitcoin as an investment. Trump openly predicted Bitcoin would surpass the market cap of silver, and potentially someday gold.

Had a batshit insane moment happen in Nashville:

Heather Morgan AKA Razzlekhan had the gall to show up. She's one of the people who pleaded guilty to hacking Bitfinex in 2016.

I've asked around and folks have told me she has also showed up recently at events in NYC and Stanford.

Suspicious AF that she's walking around freely... smells like she's flipped to working with the feds.

I think having grifting politicians at a Bitcoin conference is actually awful for Bitcoin.

I hadn’t listened to a full length Trump speech in a long time. Wow, what an actor. And I don’t mean that in a good way.

With that said, two things stand out:

It’s cool that Bitcoin has grown to the size where former presidents and current political candidates need to pander to it.

And it’s also cool that they are all clearly woefully uneducated on the issue and have no idea what the first thing about it is. We have a lot more room to operate when our enemies are idiots versus when our enemies are intelligent.

These things take time, technological innovations generally require an entire generation to become understood by the living. Trump is almost 80, it’s no shocker that he has no idea what’s going on. But the ball is rolling in the right direction.

Nothing shows the little respect he has for Bitcoin more than this quote 😂😂😂

Watching some of this bitcoin conference makes me .... less interested in bitcoin than ever before. Bitcoin feels like a SuperPAC, a lobbying group, or some other huge scummy political football.

What is the new edgy underground hacker thing that we should all be jumping ship into?

The Bitcoin conference currently has a lot of political theater, and the Trump headliner is front and center much to everyone’s joy or frustration depending on where you stand on that, but I’ll take a moment to highlight something that’ll get lost in the shuffle.

Today on the main stage, Jason Maier (author A Progressive’s Case for Bitcoin) interviewed progressive congressman Rho Khanna. They talked about a lot of stuff but the TLDR headline takeaway statement from Khanna was “Bitcoin is about freedom. Bitcoin is about human rights.”

And around the same time, a bunch of Democrat Congress people sent a letter to the DNC chair saying the party needs to embrace this industry better, and basically that the Warren wing of the party isn’t the way to go here anymore. Whether it’s polling data, sheer numbers about how many Americans own this stuff, or more knowledge conversations about bitcoin’s energy impact and other things, being anti-bitcoin is a losing strategy.

Yes, a lot of this will be forgotten after the election, both from Republicans and Democrats. Politicians gonna politic. And there will be shitcoinery. Politicians are currently in their pandering phase. But when I began writing about this industry nearly seven years ago, I would not have expected to see this much explicit support by 2024.

The builders, the educators, the advocates- all of your work does matter. At least when it comes to protecting Americans and others against some of the most potentially hostile government positions, the narrative war is working. We need more work on the right to privacy, and that imo is the harder battle, but given how successful things have been on other fronts, I think that front is workable too.
