Yeah I read about this. We already had bird flu a couple of times but they need another one that will scared us so, they can take control over us again. Covid was a test, now the real deal is coming.

I am not a conspiracy theorist and I trust real science and I'm well aware we are yet another organism on this planet which can be beaten by tiny micro organisms but one thing is certain. Governments are lacking control over us and the will do anything to regain that back. Not all governments are alike and they all have different methods.

I'm not sure I should write down these thoughts right now while I'm not sure about them, but if you are reading this apparently I did.

I think nostr may already be doomed for two reasons. And as a result of that, if I conclude as such, it would make sense to start working on a successor protocol. I've been taking some notes about what we should change if we started over, but that's the extent of it, I'm not working on a successor protocol. I'm only working on nostr. So don't misinterpret this note, which just represents some thoughts I've been having.

Reason one is the misaligned incentives of note copying. The incentives are to copy your notes to every relay you can, blast them out everywhere, to get more reach. That incentive doesn't go away until and unless all the clients do the outbox model. But they don't have an incentive to change, and there are people who don't give a fuck about fixing this and argue against fixing it and argue for note copying, and there is no way in a free society to make them care. So we can never fix this, and nostr will always be centralized in practice and never what it could have been. That means nostr is doomed and unfixable and we should make sure to start differently next time so this doesn't happen again.

Reason two is that the seed culture of nostr was far too monolithic: bitcoiners. What a culture develops into probably depends on how diverse its seed was. It's quite hard to get people onto nostr unless they are at least very bitcoin tolerant. Most people (yes, I think most) are put off by so much bitcoin promotion and related posts. Certainly people can follow anybody they want, and make their own independent cultures, perhaps even on a disjoint set of relays. But this isn't likely to happen due to the law of large numbers - there are far more ways for them to encounter and interact with the nest of bitcoiners then to not encounter and interact with them.

These are thoughts I'm entirely unsure about. Maybe I'm wrong in both cases. These are my worries.

Had a talk this morning following yesterday's discussions about safety on Nostr. This reply is hard to argue with. If you're a nym it doesn't concern you much. If you create "social media content" like videos or images and people even know or recognize you, they might do the worst things for the worst reasons and there currently is no way to prevent or stop that.

Thinking about this a lot today. It's a fine line between censorship resistance and people feeling safe to use the protocol in a way they see fit.

If we want to always have a couple of Bitcoin anons, ignore what I said. If we want mass adoption it's a topic we need to address.

Can it be addressed tho? Yes, but we would need to shift from absolute censorship resistance to something compromised. Maybe some community based reporting mechanism that relays comply with in terms of deleting said notes. We would still not have a central instance but the community guiding such things.

Should it be done? Up for discussion. Especially now that we have a main focus on the outbox model and blastr, it would make it way harder to implement something like that as notes get spread out on many relays that all would need to comply to some mechanism like that. Almost impossible if it's not a standard part of the protocol.

I know this is not a popular topic. I'm interested what people think about it tho.

With the way Nostr is designed that might be tough to fix. Toothpaste out of the tube, etc. once a note is broadcast and copied to other relays that may or may not conform to the same policies.

Yes, relays and maybe groups/communities can already do this.

But this one would be complete free-speech sovereignty over entire profiles or individual notes. Encryption allows everything to be private in public. Tunneling over a public channel, like a DM.

Those who don't have the key would just filter out at query level, or something, same as with mutes.
