Why Nostr is struggling…

There is too much of an overlap with X, not only in the feature sets among the primary applications, but more importantly, in the kind of audience that Nostr is catering to.

Sure..censorship resistance at the protocol level is a differentiator, but the to the average person, you may as well be talking gibberish. They don’t know wtf a protocol is in the first place - let alone why it matters for censorship resistance to happen at that level, or more importantly, WHY they should trust Nostr to deliver on that promise. “Bcoz nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m said so” is not an argument.

Bluesky is a case in point here.

It’s got a VERY similar feature set to X, claims to be open source / censorship resistant (similar narrative to Nostr), and is growing MUCH faster than Nostr, bc it has captured a key audience, ie; people with TDS and EDS (Elon Derangement Syndrome).

https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/bluesky-signups-surge-uk-amid-musks-row-with-government-over-riots-2024-08-13/?

I’ve been on there a few times, and the content quality is enough to make you want to throw up….but at the very least, it’s working for that kind of content, and for the people who want it.

I don’t have a direct answer here..but I think it’s something to do with the over-emphasis on technicals.

nostr:npub1az9xj85cmxv8e9j9y80lvqp97crsqdu2fpu3srwthd99qfu9qsgstam8y8 mentioned increasing the emphasis on design the other day. I agree this is a move in the right direction. We’re taking a very design-focused approach with nostr:npub15xd2mmjnh3caykh77djsv73e0zkrp42jp5mwerx8f4m6su40wdvss7t3l3 (we’ll have ALOT more to show in the next 6wks).

That being said, it’s not enough.

IMO, Nostr is technically mature enough for us to go out there and talk about it to more people, and build a narrative BEYOND the 500 of us that are talking to each other on here.

People like nostr:npub1l2vyh47mk2p0qlsku7hg0vn29faehy9hy34ygaclpn66ukqp3afqutajft or nostr:npub1dergggklka99wwrs92yz8wdjs952h2ux2ha2ed598ngwu9w7a6fsh9xzpc can correct me if I am wrong here. Maybe there’s alot more to do technically.

But if I am right, I’d like to see more initiatives that are marketing oriented being supported by nostr:npub17xvf49kht23cddxgw92rvfktkd3vqvjgkgsdexh9847wl0927tqsrhc9as and nostr:npub10pensatlcfwktnvjjw2dtem38n6rvw8g6fv73h84cuacxn4c28eqyfn34f and other coalitions. Maybe we even need a council of Nostr businesses, who together pool some funds to help drive some marketing initiatives?

Whatever the case, we need to expand upon the Nostr narrative, make it more compelling and speak to more people about it.

At the very least, we have to conquer then Bitcoiners. If we can’t get the segment who are into freedom money onto the freedom of speech network, we’re DOA. That’s a first step.

I know nostr:npub1hz5alqscpp8yjrvgsdp2n4ygkl8slvstrgvmjca7e45w6644ew7sewtysa is working on a very cool initiative in relation to this. The Nostr Booth is IMO a great way to make Nostr more “real” for bitcoiners by having a physical presence at all the conferences.

I know nostr:npub1utx00neqgqln72j22kej3ux7803c2k986henvvha4thuwfkper4s7r50e8 + nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 are doing some Podcast outreach. That’s super important too. nostr:npub16vrkgd28wq6n0h77lqgu8h4fdu0eapxgyj0zqq6ngfvjf2vs3nuq5mp2va and crew are putting on Nostriga. Amazing. nostr:npub16c0nh3dnadzqpm76uctf5hqhe2lny344zsmpm6feee9p5rdxaa9q586nvr / nostr:npub12vkcxr0luzwp8e673v29eqjhrr7p9vqq8asav85swaepclllj09sylpugg are doing great things with nostr:npub1spdnfacgsd7lk0nlqkq443tkq4jx9z6c6ksvaquuewmw7d3qltpslcq6j7, etc on the content side. I’ve got some things up my sleeve personally which I will begin to do once nostr:npub15xd2mmjnh3caykh77djsv73e0zkrp42jp5mwerx8f4m6su40wdvss7t3l3 is in a position to represent a NEW kind of Nostr-product..

But we need MOAR..

And…we also need to find another angle that is NOT about censorship resistance. That’s clearly not working against X.

I don’t know the EXACT narrative or spin, but it has to be more “running towards” than “running from”.

More white pill, less black pill.

Anyway.

I will probably turn this into an article. I’ve been thinking more and more about “writing in public” as we build Satlantis, and sharing more about how we’re thinking about growing a “network product” on top of a “network protocol”.

If you think this was valuable, please repoast so more people can see and get involved in the discussion.

I think Nostr has a brilliant take on how to do social media right. The lack of manipulating algorithms alone frees us all from the mental angst that one will experience on mainstream social media platforms.

Having praised it to the rafters, I also think that persisting with the almost exclusive focus on pitching Nostr as a twitter killer is misguided. For one, it hasn't killed Twitter, not even a dent. Elon is more of a threat to twitter than any upstart.

When looking at the way the online world "over there" is going, it is a bit naive telling a normie that Nostr is a superior form of social media. That is like saying you are a nicer version of Hannibal Lector. Think about it. In the minds of the masses, Twitter and FaceBook, Insta, Tik Tok are social media. The way they do social media is toxic, and whether their gazillion-strong userbase admit it or not, there is a growing societal sense that “social media is not healthy”. Hence my puzzlement at insisting on pitching Nostr as a better social media, especially when it is so much more.

Nostr is a new internet where you take your ID from app to app signing in with something akin to an automatic smart key. You aren't tracked or asked for personal details or served ads. There is no controlling central forces, no equivalent of mega sites trying to silo the internet, forcing users to comply with ever more stringent privacy invading requiremens. The users have the controlling hand on the Nostr internet.

Of course social media apps are probably the most polished on Nostr, but the array of working apps that the average person could use regularly are there already. Venture capitalists need to throw their money at mostly non social media apps.

Pitch Nostr as a suite of apps. Pitch the dumbed down version of the Nostr philosophy. People will come.

And who pitches the Nostr apps? Those blue check X users on Nostr. They need to step up.

Jaron Lanier had it right 6 years ago. For their own sake, they need to get off Twitter. Seriously, there is a every chance they are mentally ill to some degree. They can literally detox on Nostr which doesn't have the manipulation model at its core.

And secondly they need to get off Twitter for the sake of society, especially the Nostr society. Only by preaching to Twitter users from the outside, with an outsider perspective, can they expect to be taken seriously with their Why Nostr? pitches.

They should pummel Medium and long form platforms with Why Nostr? And push the apps not the social media.

Their posts will surely get tweeted. Twitterati will get to read the perspective of outsiders, recovering Twitter addicts who have found a new internet as envisioned by Tim Bernard Lee that already works well, and already has a bunch of productive apps. The Twitter killers can continue to be the best iteration ever of social media, but for marketing purposes, they are a part of the rich Nostr sphere, not the overarching big daddy. Something like that!

What can I say from Shipyard.pub? Not so obvious how to get started.

Now I'm writing in draft form, nice.

Added a gif just to make the point.

Removed all distractions in full screen mode. Not sure why the text is overflowing my mobile screen.

How do I get out of full screen?

Just hit something and ended back at the start saying I had no drafts.

Shoot the bed.

Clicked on write again, and I'm back on the draft that apparently doesn't exist. Not sure what that's about. No indicator it is saving it for me.

I just copied everything to this point because I am going to click what should be the menu. But I'm not sure what might happen.

No idea what the flow is here. The menu option brought up a screen that's got a transparent window over it so I can't click on anything. Preview at the bottom, clicked but that shows no preview.

Again not sure what took me back to schedule.

The pen icon top right. What does that do? It says write. What am I doing now?

Back on the main screen, writing with gif and attachment options, preview and schedule.

This feels fine, the right page to be writing. I will give a miss on the full screen, unless there's a really simple way to escape full screen, of course.

Still not sure what I'm doing. One false move... Copying manually as I go.

Preview works. It's a great Font.

I'm going to set to publish it in an hour. Here goes nothing.

Back again, found the edit option. Scheduling options are pretty cool. Defaults or custom any date or time.

#shipyard #nostr

It is mind blowing how mankind ever got this far. We don't know much about anything and what we do know gets twisted and obfuscsated.

Abiogenic theory says that fossils could not possibly create the amount of oil we have used so far. Is that about right?

If that gets proven correct in my lifetime, the biggest Homer Simpson DOH and forehead slap in history is probably going to kick off a tsunami that drowns all our dumb gullible asses.

The moon landing happened though, please? I actually watched it on TV. Or did I? Did I have TV then. It's all an illusion. We do create our own reality, else we would go mad.

I'm not a kid any more and I really wouldn't be hopeful for the future if it weren't for Bitcoin. Really, the general direction is such a disappointing down or inward at best. Bitcoin started as a few bright sparks flying off, but it seems they are landing and catching fire a little bit. At some point that process should produce enough firelight for enough people to see by and change the current disappointing direction of travel.

There are billions of seeds in the soil waiting for a reason to germinate. Sometimes we are smart enough to work out what they need to get going. But Nature knows better than us usually.

It was 4 year apprenticeships when I was a lad. Admittedly plumbers would have spent 3 years cleaning solders. But it's the experience around experts that counts in the long run. Your perspective is useful, especially if you were to show the mistakes. Because it's getting over problems that teach the most. Cheers

The veg looks delicious and the peppers look spicy. What do they measure on the Richter scale?

Excuse the brain dump. I have been grappling with how to entice potential readers/customers on my website to try out Nostr. Nostr as in social media, because tht is how it is pitched (I hink wrongly, but hey, I justturned up!!) . My conclusion is that it is super easy to show someone to sign up to Amethyst say, but once signed up, what then? They look at a bunch of posts that may or may not make a good first impression.

And if I say, to find me on Nostr, to see a feed you might identify with, just copy and paste a (mental long wtf) npub key? Compared to @XYZ that's a massive first hurdle right there, to enthuse a normie FB user into grappling with a move onto Nostr social media. And we arent even at signing back in or event signers yet!

But like you, I had a light bulb moment. A trip through the apps on https://nostr.net/ is golden and inspired me to see Nostr in a new light, or as I suspect, the original light before the focus on social media clouded the overall (marketing) vision?

I set up a web page yesterday, my attempt to woo potential new customers (zero tech heads) to try out Nostr via the world of other Nostr apps. Apart from going to home pages, they don't need to do anything to get a good first impression of what's available. Signing up for a Pinterest-like experience is not necessary. Just to see that there is a Pinterest on Nostr is pretty cool in itself. Spin through a few more. Mrs Jones from FaceBook is much more likely, in my view to be open to scarier terms like npubs and event signers etc.

Im not dissing the Twitter-killer apps, at all, but think about it, social media is becoming poison because of how they do it on the other side. I did use to avoid social media like the plague. Nostr does social media right, honest, mate. I think that, really, but say it outloud to your mother, its not an easy sell. However saying that Nostr does Pinterest or form-filling right, thats more credible, no? Anyway, this is my pitch on my site.

"In the tech world Nostr is best known as a "Twitter-killer" or the social media app built by Bitcoiners. I used to avoid social media like the plague, but Nostr is far from the gruesome Wild West experience it is portrayed as. Sure, there are a lot of Bitcoin enthusiasts and developers, but there's great conversation to be had on all sorts. And once I started to use hashags: #olives, #gardening, #chickens #catsr, or #asknostr, well, horizons have really opened up.

(I show a nice pic of Amethyst for mobile, Satellite for desktop social media.)

But Nostr apps are the big surprise.

Nostr is actually a protocol that enables the construction of a new internet. An internet many say we sorely need.

Nostr developers are releasing Twitter-killer, everything-killer apps on Nostr, almost daily. It is still very early in terms of choice, but I am very happy to incorporate the examples listed below into my business work flow.

I follow with a quick spin through the apps that I am using or getting into.

I give the 1-2 how to sign into Nostr apps. And a link to a more expansive How To use Nostr and sign into apps secure and fast. Thats it.

Re-reading my pitches for Mrs Jones on FB to join Nostr social media from cold now sounds faintly ridiculous. But if she has been wooed by other apps, she is more likely to answer the call to install Amethyst or whatever, so I can at least DM her when her eggs are coming.

At the moment my website is on Ghost, which is pretty damn good. And I will need Whatsapp to send updates on delivery times. But if I can get my site onto Nostr with npub.pro bring it on. Because then I can really consolidate the business side of things. Customers will have the whole billing and zap payment option on the same page too.

This protocol has got my vote.

#asknostr Can someone check my maths? When critics say Bitcoin has no track record, it has only been around for 14 years, consider the trading years it has been open. The New York Stock Exchange is open for trading 6.5 hours a day five days a week. Since January 3rd 2009, Bitcoin has been "open for business" 136,776 hours. That's 21042 NYSE trading days, which is 4208 weeks, which, not allowing for other holidays is 80 years in stock market years. Does that figure out right or do I need to move a decimal point #bitcoin

Hey #grownostr what do you think to the woven olive wood fencing as sides to raised beds? Nothing goes to waste. With metal grid, mallazo, you can weave really tight curves. Or au natural use olive branches as stakes and keep the curves shallower. And there is no restriction on height except your framing.

#olivegroveeggs

I'm jealous! Even cherry tomatoes are slow for me this year. Just had a dump of rain so we shall see how #grownostr fortunes change over the next week.

You seem pretty switched on to Nostr. If I set up my business online with a bunch of Nostr apps, what is the best approach to relays. Or any other steps to be a responsible user?
