Agreed. Most old electronics become e waste. Doesn't solve the issue though.
I had an excellent question once from a seminar participant: "What's the average lifespan of a mining rig and what happens to it at the end of it's lifespan? Is it landfill?"
AFAIK some parts might be recycled but the rest is landfill.
I was given 2 S9 antminers and after learning how they operate and testing them out... here are my thoughts. Likely, anyone mining has had a similar trajectory of cranial rumblings.
-They're LOUD. So to keep indoors would require some good sound dampening and piping.
-They aren't currently profitable. (But could be with a lower time preference if the Sats are stacked.) So to use as a heater is intriguing.
-The lifespan of these ASICs is short. So it's basically recycling and landfill after 3-5 years. Not great for sustainability ๐ All that metal and plastic mined. Oooof.
-Should I bother joining a pool or just lottery solo mine? Hm.
And that's where I am with this. Moore's law essentially guarantees the obsolescence of these rather quickly. Which is why a decentralized algo like the Monero one in theory seems better.
I'm open to more thoughts and perspectives. Advice?

"You'll own nothing and be happy."
With the prospect of 80-year mortgages, fractional ownership, a larger government presence, high taxes, and Universal Basic Income (UBI), it appears that traditional notions of ownership are evolving. While I remain open to these changes, I have an underlying resistance to this.
Being a proud owner of tangible possessions brings a profound sense of pride and responsibility. It's a deeply personal experience.
I don't have strong attachments to most items, for they're all mostly replaceable, but being able to care for and "own" something should be preserved as we embrace the advancements in AI and robotics.
The transformative impact of AI and robotics on humanity is undeniable, but the concept of owning things outright should remain an enduring part of our future.
Cars, houses, instruments, technology, digital property, books, clothes, bandwidth, food even etc... time to start thinking about how we enshrine ownership rights.
Nostr is still SO refreshingly awesome!
Every time I pop in and engage, there's so many people acting cool, helping each other, thinking critically and wanting to learn and build.
The real time convos about tech, computing science, Bitcoin etc has been second to none.
WGMI, happy Saturday Nostrinos!

It's an interesting sociological view to see how people's behavior evolved on Twitter.
That polarizing mud slinging and tribalism just got so so rampant. It's still there and the people that like it the most seem to like that aspect of it.
This is why Nostr and the people who hang out here is so refreshing. Open minded people, thinking critically, trying to learn more, helping each other and building up, not tearing down.
Nice recommendations. I want to know more about the functionalities and differences between Signal and SimpleX and then this new app you're bringing up. Signal requiring a phone number is a non starter for me. Plus they've been compromised a fee times. No thanks.
SimpleX isn't P2P is surprising. So your messages are sent via? Relays? The dev seems legit and lots of people vouch for it since I don't have the expertise to audit the code myself.
I run Tor and then SimpleX.
Will be interesting to try Keet.
I'll also check out Seth for Privacy's podcast.

Yes this is what I'm finding. It's wild. It's like tracing the roots of Bitcoin back to key pair encryption...
Like discovering not only the music you favourite musicians listened to but ones those musicians grew up on.
Interesting. How is it different than signal?
I'm running android but shall see if there's a version....
Wait. JOHN MCAFEE HAS ENTERED THE CHAT
Follow up. But now SimpleX is very compelling. So there's that too. But something about running PGP yourself is like using Bitcoin... first hand magic of computing science math.
