The chickadees love the sunflowers that I have laid out for them on the deck and they spend from dawn to dusk attacking them for the seeds. The soil temp in the #greenhouse was closer to a low end germination temp and with the plastic all finished now and the heater/light set inside I'm really hoping to be able to keep it above freezing when the arctic blast hits Friday. I'm likely far too optimistic about my chances but I feel it is worth a shot and if anything I will learn from the experience.
The next days are going to be a wet and sloppy mess of weather with it vacillating between rain and snow, both to be quite heavy at times. I have the snowblower ready to go but there is a good chance that the snow will be melted by the rains. The bad part will be the sub zero temps following which will turn everything to a sheet of ice.

Yesterday was a #1980s movie binge day for us. I've been making sure to show the boys the classic #movies that I grew up on, and so many of us did, like Real Genius, Ghostbusters, Short Circuit, Gremlins, etc. We've been going a bit slower with them but it was time for a full day marathon. Started with Back To The Future 1, then an episode of the new Dan Aykroyd show, then Back To the Future 2, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of The Lost Ark, and finished the night off with Wargames. By the end the boys were rather restless and not paying the most attention but Wargames managed to drag them back in at the end.
The Winter is trying to finally show up, but not until tomorrow. Calls are for 6-8 inches of snow but it will be 40F on Wednesday, then Friday night is supposed to be -1F... I have my work cutout for me today to prepare for this inbound mess.

It's been 80s movie day for us. Back to the future 1 & 2 and now Indiana Jones 1

Yesterday morning continued the local car crash swarm. This is the 3rd in a week within a 100yds of each other and the worst so far as the car t-boned a trailer left hanging in the left lane as the truck sat in the median. I'm being more cautious so as not to get caught up in the continuation of the swarm.
I got another piece of plastic up in the greenhouse but it is not exactly right so I will have to work on it a lot more today as it tries to snow past the rain.
The chickadees love the sunflowers I've saved and are working hard on the heads I have laid out for them. I'm going to setup my camera a little bit better as I like the shots of them pulling the seeds out and there are more than enough heads for them to work on.

Good Friday night to you all #nostr. May the water soothe the aches and pains of the week away.

Lol. I've found it's best to use those credits sooner than later. I've made tried to build up a big stock of "wife credit" from so many of my projects but life strips the glow so fast.
Be careful, it's either a test or a trap. Make sure you answer her correctly. It's an "unladen" swallow...

Want my general and am studying slowly
All Ham content is good. Anything is better than nothing and useful for
someone
No LoRa yet
I really like sstv from the ISS and want a better antenna for longer range reception of signals
We have a pretty solid repeater network locally and I can get coverage in places my cellphone has nothing so I have been really happy to have my license. I grew up around Ham in the 90s with my grandfather and studied hard then but never took the test. When I went to study for it 30 years later it all was right there and took me little time to get to test level.

The rains came down and I worked inside yesterday. I started in the greenhouse and managed to get the plastic shifted around without taking it all down. It's still not perfect and just shy of touching the ground on either side. I'll be back working on it today.
The tool shed is slowly getting cleaned and at least now I have the ability to walk through it, which allows me the room to reorganize it. Summer was busy and I didn't take the time to clean as I went, something I have always been poor at doing.
I went to look at the wreck site and wow was that a lucky idiot. They were hauling ass to hit as hard as they did and in only a few hundred feet from the intersection with the highway. If the vehicle had been a foot to the left the driver would have died going head first into the massive Ponderosa pine.

These are the ones I make. I make mostly flour rather than masa.

I have the Wisner book and Ianto Evans book which I have been pouring over working on my design. It's interesting seeing how small your firebox is, doesn't take much.
Looks tasty. Tortillas are stupid easy to make, especially with a press, and can be made to flavor for any meal.
Now that transaction fee storm has passed I'm back to heating my living space primarily with wood in a rocket mass heater instead of Asics.
https://v.nostr.build/Ee2K.mp4
Wood is burned in the small firebox and heat radiates from the barrel warming the space quickly while the fire burns.

As the exhaust gasses make their way to the chimney, they pass through ductwork in a plywood box filled with pea gravel.

The majority of the heat from the exhaust is transfered to the gravel before exiting up the chimney. By the time the gases exit the box, they are cool enough for me to put my hand on the chimney pipe.

After the fire burns out, the heat absorbed by the pea gravel slowly radiates out into the living space until the next fire is burned and the gravel is recharged with heat once again. I built this rocket mass heater for a fraction of the cost of a wood burning insert, with no special tools, materials, or skills.

It has been an unusually warm November and December here at the homestead. Normally we have to start burning wood in the rocket mass heater early November to stay comfortable but this year, the bitcoin mining dehydrator was enough to stay warm and do some food preservation simultaneously.

Transaction fees started climbing and I was shocked to see the most efficient miner I had approaching break even at my electric rate.

I didn't have the circuit to run it wired yet but this bump in fees was the motivation I needed to get the miner hashing. Coincidentally, the weather also started to get colder finally so getting the miner up and running was a win/win.

It successfully kept us and our guests warm through the holidays, even earning some Bitcoin beyond the cost of power at times, all while allowing us to save our firewood.

We did have to fire up the rocket mass heater a handful of times, but so far we've burned less than half the amount of wood compared to previous years. This is thanks to the combination of the warm weather, and high transaction fees allowing us to stay warm with heavily subsidized electric heat.

This might be the first winter we make it through with wood leftover for the next year, typically I'm scrounging for the last couple weeks.

I've got the plans and most of the materials for the rocket I want to build in my greenhouse. I need to source 100+ ft of stove pipe to bury though for soil heat. Your setup looks killer!
Now that's the way! I love to be able to repair the tools I use if they break.
Depends on filtering. Some honey will have wax left or pollens if not filtered out well.
I was lucky to be taught domestic tasks as well as trades growing up. All kids should learn to cook, sew, be handy, build and create. It's never to late to learn though!
My life is the same, every morning though for me. 4am wide awake.
I grill over flames in our fire pit just about every weekend. My boys are almost always right there by the flames with me. Experiences make the best memories.
