It's seeming more likely that what got our birds last was raccoons and not coyotes as the neighbors got hit too but saw the coons. Still keeping the traps set up the hill for a while. As the boys and I loaded rocks into the trailer I found a pair of blue tailed skinks which went back to the bushes. We got the rocks all moved to the wall and had to push the birds back onto the farm.
In the evening J was riding his bike and saw a hen with 5 fresh chicks roaming around by the driveway. We went out and after a bit of work managed to get them and her and into the brooder hut where they can be safe.

Like any new or newish development there is the buildout phase where a bunch of that should get dealt with, hopefully. I just hate how long it takes to get to production levels.

Nothing in the traps yesterday so I will keep checking each morning in hopes of catching a coyote. After my hike up the hill I made my way to the lower ex-spud garden where I raked out the rows, laid out the irrigation lines, then planted 125 spots of carrots. They should have just enough time before the hard freezes hit to get big enough.
The shredded potatoes came out of the #freezedryer amazing! Super way to process the spuds and they will keep for a long ass time this way. I have to mylar bag the shreds today so they don't rehydrate.

Took the traps and cams up to the upper pen yesterday and got them setup in the entry points with cams watching them. There was more apparent activity overnight when I went up to set so I am pretty sure they are still active, which I hope to have caught at least one likely coyote. The cams will help id it if it isn't in the trap.
I highly recommend watching Joe Rogan's new special, it was seriously funny. I laughed so hard, it felt good.

I have always despised that shit band. Realizing our aging is the nail in the coffin of our youth but also shows our awareness. Age does have some benefits to it.

Batch 91 is now running in the freeze dryer, 5 full trays of shredded potatoes. Took about 5 pounds per tray and they made sure to blanch them first. Curious how long the cycle will take.
Got a number of things harvested, worked in the greenhouse, stuffed lettuce seeds in the soil, then found a number of coyote trails under the sheep's upper pen fence that I will be baiting and setting traps for today.

Cockatoos are damn funny birds. Grew up next door to a hillside full of exotic birds in cages and got to help hand raise some of the chicks. Cockatoos bond really stong.
