From woodworking to aerospace, 30+ years of hands-on experience—sharing lessons, skills, and shop insights.

I am fascinated by Beam Bots.

They are basically the bare minimum for a functioning robot that uses nothing but solar power. They generally have no batteries and use capacitance for electrical storage.

Some can even seek out light sources in their movement.

Has anyone ever made one?

The comment is: “Damn!”.

Merry Christmas! I hope your day is great!

Pro tip:

You can use your table saw to cut out specific shapes, not just cuts.

1️⃣ Mark the shape in pencil on the wood you are cutting.

2️⃣ Adjust the distance from fence and the height of the blade to gradually nibble away the shape.

3️⃣ Take gradual cuts of about 1/8” inch at a time, adjusting the distance and height for every cut.

4️⃣ When done, you clean up the cuts with a file or sandpaper.

This method works on making a birdmouth, like I did, or you can make complex custom molding with enough patience.

PS: I used this method because I needed very clean and straight bird mouths for my project.

I could have used a jigsaw, however, a jigsaw blade will flex and you will get a crooked cut.

Cheers!

Working on the awnings over my shop doors today.

Yes, you reminded me of that rule! My dad taught me that one.

Ahh the mysterious toaster!

I never received the privilege of tearing apart the VCR. Now they are antiques!

Who all out there was like me as a kid?

No, not socially awkward and dorky…

But, loved to take apart the broken radio to see the components and didn’t know enough to be able to put it back together.

Those were good times!

What is something that you took apart as a kid?

By the way, dorks are cool! 😎

Those are beautiful!

I was carrying wood back to the shop that I am building, when I was reminded of a woodworking tip that someone taught me years ago.

They said to never lean lumber lengthways against a wall.

It will cause the boards to bend as gravity pulls on it.

Always lay lumber out flat and supported.

Sounds weird, but it is true.

Running Ghost Addresses...

That was incredibly simple, nostr:npub19tcpurtt6xulhw0r6sc404j9jraj0h8me2lzs7z2tqewz7l0hpas59nlea ⚡👻 And, I didn't have to opt-in to any of the other Amboss services. Thank you.

I will keep using my pay@derekross.me address, but this is an extremely viable solution. Every home node runner that has wanted to setup LN addresses should look into doing this, if they're not comfortable with the technical hurdles of running your own LN address infrastructure.

Pay@derekross.me? How is that accomplished?

We are getting to the end of the year.

What was the best skill that you learned this year and why?

I’ll start off… and it may be a surprise.

Wordpress, learning it has opened up the world of having and maintaining a website for me. I like to write and this will allow me an outlet for that, as I turn a page in my life.

You?
