From what I can understand from your explanation of the chest of drawers, the stability depends on how you make the joints and possibly stiffeners. Also, in furniture restoration the kind of glue is very important. I tend to use two part epoxy for old joints. Epoxy doesn't need tight fitting joints. It can fill gaps. If gaps get too big, thickeners can be added.

The “Fab Lab” is coming along. Been a little slow because of weather and family reasons. I am getting back to the siding.
