It’s amazing to me that the world is still obsessed with low fat diets. So many products cut out the natural fat, and what remains is just a sugar fest.

Fly on an long distant flight- constantly offered breads, juices, fat free yogurts, etc. Sugar bomb after sugar bomb. I usually fast on planes.

At a breakfast buffet right now. Eggs fried in seed oil. The butter packets are mixed with seed oil. Juices and fruits everywhere. Coffee machines whose only milk option is fat free skim milk. The main area is waffles and syrup. The child at the table next to me has a breakfast plate with chocolate-covered waffles, french fries, and juice- just layers of carbs and sugar. One has to dig into the corners of the room to find the meat and boiled eggs and such.

After experimenting on the other bird app for a month, I’ve decided to go back to the blue check.

I have a distinct recollection, despite me being relatively young, of the time when the idea of installing traffic radars in Spain appeared. The dissenting voices among politicians were loud, but promptly quelled. "Safety" first.

For a while, angry victims took the machines down, and then the government installed cameras to watch over the radars. Then a few cameras were taken down, so they put the cameras on 10 metre tall poles, and cameras watching the cameras, and all adjacent roads, and people finally gave up.

Soon after, the idea of putting surveillance cameras on the street appeared, and the politician voices against it were a lot less loud this time, and no action by the people was taken once they started to put them everywhere -- because "terrorism", of course.

Now we have cameras at the entrance of my city that read the stickers on your windscreen and determine whether you're allowed in or not, and whether you're up to date with mandatory fees or not. They can know if it was you driving because they're filming your face (so no more saying it was the wife speeding, to save a couple of points on your licence).

We have "traffic" helicopters constantly flying over us, who watch if you're holding your phone in your hand while driving from hundreds of meters above you, while measuring the position and speed of all the vehicles in a 2 square kilometre are at the same time, streaming the data live.

The slippery slope if fucking real, and kudos to these freedom fighters, but I'm not optimistic.

My oldest son (5) was born with grade 3 microtia / aural artesia which is basically a small ear in plain English. He does not have an ear canal in that ear and can only hear out of one ear. It is a condition that affects 1 in 10,000 children without any known cause.

Today he’s getting a prosthetic ear and flew to Tokyo with his mom and I’m staying with our youngest for the week. I’m bummed out I cannot be there with him but it was easier this way for all of us.

I just got a photo of him and emotions got the best of me. The prosthetics lab is matching the color of the new “ear” to his skin tone. He hasn’t said much and it’s probably a lot to process. I can’t even imagine what he’s thinking. At least they will stay for a week and do something fun. His first visit anywhere was earlier this year (to Tokyo, for the initial appointment where he had to take an imprint of his other ear). He was super excited to fly for the first time and to visit a larger city (we live in a rural area).

I thought I’d share since not many people are aware of microtia and what it is.

When he turns 10, he is eligible for ear reconstruction where they use cartilage from one of the ribs to shape the “natural” ear and put in place. It’s a series of surgeries and many visits to the surgeon’s office. We will have to move to Tokyo or Hokkaido for at least a month to do this. It’ll be up to him if he wants to go through with it, we cannot make that decision for him.

Otherwise it’s a typical Monday afternoon here. Back to being busy! 🫡
