Dit deden ze omdat ze ontevreden waren over de snelheid en de kosten van de Bitcoin-transacties. Ze wilden een nieuwe versie van Bitcoin maken, die sneller en goedkoper zou zijn. Echter, hun plan stuitte op veel weerstand en kritiek vanuit de Bitcoin-gemeenschap, die vond dat Coinbase de decentralisatie en de veiligheid van Bitcoin in gevaar bracht. Uiteindelijk mislukte de poging van Coinbase om een Bitcoin fork te creëren, en bleef de originele blockchain intact.
