Happy Mother’s Day my love. You’re the sunshine for many. Learning to walk again in parallel with our son. Without you life would be empty and difficult.

This is my original favorite topic at university. Breakwater design. The rock manual gives you all the different types of rock you can use. Your location gives you your impact for which you have to design. The question is, what are the extremes? You can calculate different extremes on different designs. The van der meer formulas (who also was the professor) you use are deterministic. They were created by trial and error in lab environments at the facilities in Delft.

The theorists hated his guts, they wanted to come with theoretical frameworks while he just tested the variables at scales and implemented what actually worked across the globe.

The university I was in was interesting. It was called UNESCO-IHE so it used to be an international sub department of the Delft University of Technology that was aiming to teach engineers from across the planet our water knowledge. Old professors and engineers from contractors/corporations taught the practicalities of water engineering in a broad sense. The original name wasn’t Institue for Hydraulic Engineering for nothing. To be able to apply as a Dutchman you needed to have 3 years of working experience in the specific field, bring a relatively large amount of money and make very clear why you wanted a specific specialization.

My parents are from a poor upbringing and both worked their ass of as a teacher for sick children (mom) and a physiotherapist (dad) to give me this opportunity.

During the study I found out that most students were not enrolled in engineering degrees but in, water law, water governance etc. Mostly funded by the Bill & Melinda gates foundation and the United Nations. The students were getting prepared to become the leaders of their countries. That’s at least what our lector told us at the start and end of our studies. But the strange thing is, who paid determines what happens right? Who are all these people in these positions having to pay back their studies to?

From the start of the institute until today the focus shifted heavily from engineering to bureaucratic studies. And for my graduation project I doubted where I could have most impact. Because on the bureaucratic level the projects and money is divided, while at the engineering level you just engineer. I decided to do a simulation optimization study on the three gorges dam in China. And it was more engineering focused, while I got to see the political decision making that made the outcome obsolete. Rational decisions don’t take place when bureaucrats decide over engineers. I always hated this and understanding bitcoin changes everything.

This is the first time bureaucracy doesn’t govern over the builders with their exploitation through printing and violence. Finally the era of properly engineered money has arrived.

We’ll focus on building again, instead of the dystopian endless bureaucracy. We’ll educate a majority of engineers instead of a majority of bureacrats. The shift from majority focus of extraction of life energy will be beautiful as no force or counterfeiting will help them anymore.

I can’t wait to be in the era of the engineers, the builders.

I need to work harder to achieve our bitcoin future. Preferably rock solid and battle tested.

Yes we’ll also have our entire shop layed out there. The day before I organize a mining workshop if you’re interested. Join me at Bitcoin mining workshop with Bas & Bert https://meetu.ps/e/MWkpl/T9x6W/i

I believe nostr:npub1uv2tr83c5y7k82af6zdzlqs8m0klcmndd8u5vmlg2eyrskld6uzsv4rmr8 will be different in this respect. The conference has people of the European Parliament, Financial investigation unit etc. totally different than the standard circle jerk.

Haven’t heard of it still. But we’re investigating options.

We’ll set it up at the conference venue. Because the weight is over 3kg we’ll have to build a special stand for it which I’ll be doing in 1,5 week. I’m also bring in it to the mining workshop and bitcoin core dev. Gathering the day before.

nostr:npub18ehqwddc5t5klr8kv0my6p9mnn4fxxhuc4l4gf7rtwmgt854ez3qv8tdkj did you already post your bitcoin issuance spiral on Nostr?

If you are not going to the nostr:npub1uv2tr83c5y7k82af6zdzlqs8m0klcmndd8u5vmlg2eyrskld6uzsv4rmr8 conference you're really missing out.

If you go to a conference this is the kind of mail you would love to receive.

This week is going to be amazing.

One of the kids has a very specific candy he loves. He was complaining that for €1,- he was able to buy a lot of candies a couple of years ago. That was now only 2. He didn’t understand how this candy became so expensive.

- It’s not an Apple Watch

- My wife baked the carrot cake, it was ~€3,80

- The blanket comes from action and is actually <€10,-

- The Nintendo switch I agree, but the 11 year old is a master at cooperative strategy games with friends. I have to say games taught me a lot on my over a thousand guilder PC when I was a kid…

This evening I spend time teaching children about bitcoin. 11 years old was easily creating a new seed with nostr:npub17tyke9lkgxd98ruyeul6wt3pj3s9uxzgp9hxu5tsenjmweue6sqq4y3mgl and we used bluewallet to export the xpub. We wrote down the seed words and verified them. Signed a PSBT. Talked about devaluating currency with the Venezuelan (šŸ™nostr:npub1kvfz8rglvpsqevznlt86ukcz0s9uap3pypjwd3tnmkn2pgjmjujqlncy2c) and Zimbabwean (šŸ™nostr:npub1dergggklka99wwrs92yz8wdjs952h2ux2ha2ed598ngwu9w7a6fsh9xzpc ) notes. Explained the nostr:npub18d4r6wanxkyrdfjdrjqzj2ukua5cas669ew2g5w7lf4a8te7awzqey6lt3 on their phones. They loved magic internet money and asked a thousand questions. It was beautiful.

A couple of separate but interlinked points made in this. First - is Bitcoin a cheatcode? No, strictly speaking - it's just money as it should be with a fair set of rules, but might just feel like that if you're early in its adoption phase.

Secondly - the concept that holding Bitcoin in its purest form is actually high time preference, not low. Reason being - you are holding it to be immediately accessible, rather than investing it into projects requiring capital with an expectation of greater returns than you put in over time.

My view is the reason this feels unintuitive is linked to (1) - it's an observation best framed in a wholly bitcoin denominated world. The hurdle rate (in bitcoin terms) is incredibly high during bitcoin's adoption phase. Imagine a simple project like building a house with materials and then selling it, and trying to make money in bitcoin terms. Which is why only bitcoin related projects stand much of a chance as an opportunity cost for simple holding bitcoin. Bitcoin only VC's have a tough (but noble..) pursuit.

It’s extremely challenging to increase your bitcoin volume while investing in a bitcoin company. But I do believe the impact you can have is significant towards the eventual outcome/survival of the network.

FE when I started BitcoinBrabant in 2021 I knew I wanted to strengthen the network whatever the cost. I first built a broad website where I offered help with accepting bitcoin payments and mining setups. After having helped out quite a few businesses with mining bitcoin, ā€œstorageā€ became more important. So the quest for proper signing devices began. Eventually after testing, taking apart, investigating as many options as possible we ended up with only three devices that we could recommend.

I’ve consistently asked other bitcoiners what they believe has higher priority. Is it the audiobook of ā€œthe bitcoin standardā€ in Dutch or another mining installation? The audiobook was the outcome, so I started reading and recording it, because nobody wanted to do it.

Throughout time you should ask what is most important for bitcoin that you can contribute to.

For me personally I have a simple end goal. Separation of money and state. It’s this natural freedom I want my kids to grow up in. If we can’t complete this on planetary scale in my lifetime I would be disappointed with my work towards this goal. As a species we are currently limiting ourselves because we are mostly using terrible money.

In the past years I didn’t increase my bitcoin volume, but we were able to get closer to my goal in life. Helping and inspiring thousands of people over the past few years is something I really enjoyed. Now I feel we’re moving more towards a stage that I have been preparing for. It’s either freedom or dystopia, are you willing to fight for it?
