If anyone came here from my #booktok video, comment on this thread so we can find each other! #Tiktok #TiktokRefugee

Welcome! Glad to have you! I start by finding a couple of people whose content I like and then look at who they follow and engage with to find others who are like-minded. πŸ‘‹ 🌱

I tried to post this on the #tiktok refugee subreddit 10 minutes before the app came back on in America. My goal was to help people connect the dots and make their way to Nostr instead of other alternatives, while not talking down to them or being unsympathetic.

The post immediately got removed πŸ™ƒ

Check out the new sub r/nothinghappeninghere with 60k #TikTok refugees who are FURIOUS at Meta, Zuck, Musk, all corporate Big Tech.

I know a lot of you guys think everyone on TikTok is too braindead to be worth investing in, but there are A LOT of Americans who are getting peaked as we speak on big tech. They may not yet understand that centralization and proprietary software is the source of the problem, and they definitely don't know about Nostr. But these people are ready to get purple pilled if we can just get the information in front of them!

Yup. I can't even get own best friends to join here because they look and say... for what? We'd be lucky to absorb have even a fraction of the creators TikTok has.

I searched on TikTok today before the ban to see if anyone was talking about Nostr, and I did not one recent post about Nostr, let alone one that looked well made or got any traction.

I think those of us who understand the cultures and communities in other platforms should get used to promoting Nostr if we ever want it to be seen as a viable platform for the mainstream. I see often the culture on Nostr is that we are "better" than the users of other apps, and I don't think that's a recipe for growth.

To be honest, looking at the state of Nostr vs other decentralized platforms, I don't think we can afford to skip our on these major opportunities to take in new users.

That being said, Nostr clients I've used do not currently excel at video content, so it was always going to be a hard sell anyway.

I've been watching the TikTok ban happen and taking note of what people say they will miss about the app in hopes Nostr can learn from it:

1. The algorithm's ability to find a community where you belong, often based on shared topics of interest ( nostr:nprofile1qydhwumn8ghj76r9de5x7atnv5h8xmmrd9skctmjv4kxz7gqypup59f8q40hfs0hqgc0zquyvzdng4y032m2pfk25aqztqnlnldw2ysr5rp?)

2. The way that the comments section is actually enjoyable (and funny!) compared to other apps where the comments are more often mean

3. The content feeling more "authentic" and less polished and perfect than apps like Instagram, again with a focus on the humor of the creators and willing to be "weird"

4. Feeling like it was easier to monetize on TikTok than other apps (Zaps can help with that!)

Unfortunately I saw practically ZERO discussion of Nostr as an alternative to TikTok, so I don't know how many refugees we will be able to absorb. I hope we can make a group effort to welcome those we meet and maybe do some outreach as well!

There is an obvious argument for how Nostr solves the problems that allowed this act of government censorship to happen, we just need to get that story out there! πŸ’œ
