This is the official reflector of the Western Washington Amateur Relay Association. It contains items of interest to repeater owners and potential users in Western Washington. Please visit the WWARA website at http://www.wwara.org for more details about the organization, local policies and bandplans and the latest forms. Some of this information may be found in the Files section but the website is authoritative. The group is publicly viewable but only WWARA members can post to the group. Re: Step-by-Step Instructions?

Guys,

Maybe it is a good time to take the discussion offline or handle it via e-mail. I'm glad you were able to connect here, but the whole of the WWARA isn't needed now. :-)

Thanks

Kenny

Re: Step-by-Step Instructions?

Hi Don,Rather than send texts, I would be happy to chat with you on the phone about your questions.. I have built 4 repeaters in Anacortes for our Club. Currently we have one on Mt Erie at 224.82 and the other is at the Anacortes Salvation Army at 443.350. They are linked. I would be happy to show them to you if interested and go over the construction issues. Jim360 391-2567

Re: Narrow banding Constructive vs Destructive Communications

That's got nothing to do with it.

Re: Narrowband radios supported

Looks like the "narrowband-plan"  page just needs to be cleaned up, possibly by changing above pointer to the one you have provided at :

<https://www.wwara.org/documents/narrowband-faq/>

This was my mistake and I fixed the reference to point to the page, rather than directly to the document. The FAQ is a living document that is getting updated and revised all the time as new information is collected and questions come up.

Thanks

I wish I could agrree that Amazon is a Simple solution. It is easy to say how easy to replace equipment when the people making the statement have good paying jobs and who are not on a fixed income.

Re: Narrowband radios supported

What's not being considered is expense to the users who are low income who can't afford newer radios.

Also what is not being talked about is a 30% reduction in coverage you're going to get by going narrow band.

If a repeater owner wants to go narrow band that's his prerogative. At the same time the FCC (meaning Laura Smith) explained to me if an existing wideband repeater was on the air and coordinated there previously the coordinator would be expected to renew that coordination.

Also she said FCC rules remain fluid and you can put up any mode repeater that you want. And it would not be up to the discretion of the WWARA to determine what interference is or is not. That remains a purview of the FCC themselves.

So to say that you don't want the FCC involved really is an effort in futility. They make the rules not the WWARA.

I also agree that people want a repeater because they may not play with others and it may be an ego thing as well.

Scott I agree with you when you say we should investigate repeater pairs that are not in use. They should be allocated to somebody else and if people want to use them in a narrow band capacity at that point would be a good thing to do for the people who want to.

But this sounds like that this could be a mess that we could regret later. I think there should be room for everybody.

Good luck to you all and we'll see what happens.

Re: Narrowband radios supported

It sounds like you're suggesting two solutions to the overcrowded bands.Bump off existing repeater ownersCombine efforts and help out the existing repeaters as a team effortThe first is probably not socially acceptable but given the average age of hams, it may resolve itself.  The second suggestion is one of several we proposed and have been advocating since it was published in 2009.  https://www.wwara.org/about/wwara-vision/

Re: Narrowband radios supported

I may get yelled at but here goes:

This narrow band plan is only a "band-aid". This is only delaying the inevitable that there's no pairs coming up.  The real issue is too many people on this planet including amateurs on the west side and large cities. Every "ham" wants his own repeater, possibly because they don't play well with others in the sand-box.  Why not combine efforts and help out the existing repeaters as a team effort?

Re: Narrowband radios supported

Many repeaters use older equipment Therefore, there won't be any "data" or support from those companies. Many repeater owners can't afford to purchase the new equipment. So we are on our own.

The repair/op/maint. manuals spec out receiver adjacent spec which does not address what you folks are trying to do. It's not only modulation; just a carrier close by in frequency is a problem.

There's many repeaters that are analog/normal bandwidth and will get interference at some point. By then it's too late. Just set your older radio 15 KHz away from a local repeater and listen. It's LMR basics.

Member comment period - 53.03_K7CH_BawFaw_2026

The K7CH 53.03 repeater has passed a Board vote and is now submitted for the required 14 day member comment period.  If no negative comments are received by 7/24/25 this system will receive it's coordination.

Re: Narrowband radios supported

Karl,

Do you have specific examples you can share, where the repeater manufacture advertises narrow-band support, yet the receiver doesn't have the necessary filtering?

Thanks

Kenny

Re: Narrowband radios supported

That will be quite an accomplishment !While you are at it, something else you might investigate/consider: is the Deviation able to be altered or is it automatically compensated for byselecting a narrower bandwidth for a particular case.Deviation is generally not easily adjusted on a per design case./MJR KA7OVQ+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Narrowband radios supported

We have started a spreadsheet to document radios that are and are not narrowband capable.  This will ultimately be shared on the WWARA website when it gets to a usable size.  There are a number of radios that claim to support narrowband but it's unclear from the manual whether they actually save this information in the memory channel or if it's a system-wide setting.  In some cases, narrowband channels can be programmed with software but not from the panel.  If you have more information on a radio, let me know and I'll add it.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iHzSGnUffChA1dtc_ZXAwVrIEgVAOe4HAsOiYnDjJ5k/edit?usp=sharing
