Gm #coffeechain. Finally had a proper freeze last night after missing the southern snowpocalypse this week. Walked around barefoot like a good Floridian to check on the food forest, but now my toes are burning as they’re warming up. TMI?

One of my favorite Bill Mollison quotes, “If we lose all the universities, we lose nothing. If we lose all the forests, we lose everything.”

A little afternoon cafecito to start the weekend. Mandarins are starting to ripen and are sweet like Sunkist. In my opinion, it’s one of the best flavor combinations. #grownostr #coffeechain
Same! I also started brushing with sea salt instead of fluoride toothpaste and my teeth and gums never felt better

For those of us who want to support native ecosystems… but still want to eat. If we all grew our own food, we could return farmland to natives and do more good. Hopeful thinking…

GM nostr, been a while. The rainy season finally started a month and a half late, just in time to water the bananas that are starting to fruit. In spite of the driest start to summer in my memory, the resilient food forest continues to provide daily for my family.

The only ones I’ve tried are the Xero sandals and I love em. I’ve used them every day for 2 years and they hardly have any wear. I haven’t tried any of the shoes yet. Boat shoes or slip on Vans are the best regular shoe alternative I’ve used. If you find a good one, let me know!
Very nice! Actually most of them end up getting eaten fresh off the trees by my kids, or shared with friends/neighbors.
Having myself a mid-day #coffeechain to take in the abundance of the #garden.

Honestly not long at all, maybe a week or two, a month at most for cardboard. The chickens tear the paper apart when they scratch, then the microbiology in the coop floor and soil break it down the rest of the way. Small bits of paper and cardboard are great additions to chicken coop bedding since they are high in carbon. Good question!
Yep, I use them in a different system, but sometimes worms make it into the chicken coop as tasty treats
Paper plates and paper towels break down over time and incorporate into the compost
Sweet! Lots of good options there! I dream of a nice north-central FL property, but for now just learning/experimenting on a 1/4 acre
Chickens are an essential part of the homestead, whether urban or rural. Instead of turning food scraps into stinky fly-breeding trash, they make eggs and compost.

Excellent series for homeschoolers! As a former teacher I agree 100% the problems of the school system. Things were already bad when I was teaching in the early 1990's and I've just seen it get worse over time. I started homeschooling once my babies showed up and have never regretted it. There was a ton of value in this episode; I'm going to use some of it for my graduating son this year ("show me you know xyz and I'll give you your diploma tomorrow"). Couldn’t agree more!
I love this guy’s work. He has made the natural swimming pool/pond so accessible. Anybody make one before?

Loquat season is here in Florida. This is one of my favorite fruits, sweet and tart, it’s a great snack and easy to grow from seed. The leaves also make a great tea. It pains me that people grow this for an ornamental but never eat the fruit. Luckily it works well in suburban permaculture designs for aesthetics, quick growth, and usefulness.

I love this time of year. Citrus eating season has ended, but the best smelling season has begun. The bees are all over the orange blossoms. I’ve only been to orange country in central Florida a couple times during blossoming season, but the smell is truly intoxicating. It’s too bad the citrus industry is failing, but with natural farming methods and polyculture systems, citrus is thriving in North Florida.
