Better Soil, Better Food, Better Health

I am pleased to announce that Bright Future Farms is providing a pig for the Self Reliance Festival!

It is in Camden on October 14-15. That pig won't eat it self!

Get your tickets at selfreliancefestival.com before it's too late!

Now that my internet is fixed, I got to spend the whole day trying to get the computer to work long enough to send tax stuff to my accountant.

It was such a beautiful day to work on the land, but here I am still dealing with computers and taxes late into the evening hours.

Yay me.

#grownostr

It looks like I've finally fixed the internet connection issue. Computer speed will be the next thing to tackle, but I should be able to post on nostr again.

I have not eaten anything for 24 hours.

On purpose!

I am sure that most of you have heard of #intermittentfasting by now. It is something that I have done on and off for some time now. For the most part it has been out of convenience for me more than something with any specific intent. I am doing something different now.

I have been #fasting for the purpose of #autophagy more and more. That means that my body is eating itself. that sounds bad at first, but the body is not eating the healthy tissues. Just the bad ones that are in the way. I am monitoring a skin tag to see if it decreases in size or disappears. These fasts have gone as long as 20 hours for me. One 20 hour fast seemingly caused a die off of bad gut bacteria. Not a fun day.

I will have fasted more than thirty hours by the time I wake up. I am hoping this will reset my gut flora in a very beneficial way. We shall see. The ultimate goal would be for my #dander to go away. That would be amazing. I'll be my own guinea pig for this one. #trustthescience .

I have a pigs head in the oven to celebrate my first intentional 30 hour fast. I am going to down a half gallon of creamy Jersey milk too. A breakfast feast!

Here's to better soil, better food, and better health!

Is it #regenerative if it is moonscaped?

Many would say no. Usually they would be correct. Contrary to popular opinion, I think there is a time and place. Consider some of the common edible and #medicinalherbs that are found in many parts of the world.

Where do they grow?

Do many of them grow in disturbed soils?

Have you ever tried to grow #dandelion , #mullein , or #comfrey in your best #garden soil?

If so, you either had little successes growing them or you have very poor garden soil. Of course they do well in compacted and disturbed soils. I have found that heavy pig disturbance in a dense stand of young trees can bring a fall and early spring flush of grasses. This can be further improved by thinning the trees to let in more light.

Another use of #pigs is to flatten out a #terrace on somewhat steep terrain. I do not have a tractor yet, but I used the pigs to clear and flatten the place where I will build the tractor shed. They removed some of the trees by completely uprooting them. After they were moved, I let the ground settle and harden. It will only take me about 15-20 minutes with a mattock to improve the drainage and level out a few high spots.

I am not saying that I have always gotten it right. I certainly have not. But I have failed and succeeded on accident on many different occasions. The important thing is that you observe and take the feedback the land, plants, and animals are giving you.

The #pigs got out. It was the first time in a long time that this has happened. When using cattle panels on t-posts, you must use three wires. I missed one.

They followed me right back into the paddock without a feed bucket!

Permaculture still plays a major role for many people who primarily raise ruminants.

Maybe they have food for now,, but can they feed their stock in a drought?

Maybe they have reliable stock ponds, but where does their personal drinking water come from?

Maybe they have hardy animals that do not require shelter, but what do they build their own house out of?

Maybe they will be left alone by their neighbors and the local government. If not, do they have the social principles from permaculture to determine their decisions in how to best interact with that social edge? Or better yet, are they able to prevent the conflict in the first placed?

This piglet is eating from a container I made from a single piece of wood. It came from a wind felled red maple that has since rotted away. I made it when a needed a nesting box for rabbits, but the pigs have gotten much more use out of it.

It has been in contact with the ground for years, but it is remarkably still around. I think the fact that it usually contains some water has something to do with its longevity.

I am a fan of #biotech .

No, not the GMO corn and soy. I am a fan of living technologies. By this, i mean the use of living things in a systematic way to provide for the needs of man.

Is it #appropriatetechnology ? Yes, but it consists of living things.

Is it #permaculture ? No, but it falls well within the scope of permaculture.

I it traditional technology or #primitivetechnology ? Sometimes yes, other times it is a very new discovery.

Needing a name for this subset of #sustainable technologies, I have chosen the term #heritagebiotechnology , or #heritagebiotech . This designation encompasses those biotechnologies that have been past down from ancient times and those that have been rediscovered. It also encompasses any newly discovered #biotechnology that is sustainable, #regenerative , or otherwise appropriate and worth developing and maintaining as an inheritance for future generations.

While I am not necessarily opposed to the idea of gene splicing wheat genes into wheat plants, the splicing of wheat genes into chestnuts is clearly not something that falls under the scope of heritage biotech. Nor is the splicing of alligator genes into catfish, or human genes into corn. This is not how nature works, and the law of unintended consequences will play out around the world in a truly horrific way if these practices continue.

If that is not an example of heritage biotech, then what are some good examples that are?

I am glad you asked!

Look at the #hedgerows in Briton that hold livestock and have no need of wire that will rust or posts that will rot. Look at the #willow that is coppiced to feed #rabbits , or the #mulberry that is coppiced to feed #pigs . Look at the #beehives people have carved into living trees. Look at the living bridges of India.

The people of the canary islands used to depend on the water that fell from the drip line of trees into troughs where they collected it. That is an astounding piece of heritage biotech! Unfortunately, the Spaniards recognized this and cut down the water trees in order to subjugate the people.

Most heritage biotech goes unnoticed by the masses. It is usually a decentralized technology that a single individual can take full advantage of. It is free and open source. One could call is free and open source software ( #FOSS ) in the since that depends on the software that you download into the squishy harddrive between your ears.

It more about what you know than what you have. Septic tanks are expensive, but #worms are free. Grape trellises are expensive, but elm trees are free. Fertilizer is expensive, but compost tea is free. Lawn mowers are are expensive but sheep are valuable.

There is nothing new under the sun, and these kinds of technologies are nothing new. That said, I do not know of anyone else ever using the term heritage biotech to describe these things. I submit the term and it's accompanying explanation to the world via nostr.

Are these available for people to print out and pass out?

I had to do this. I could have made something much nicer, but the point had to be made. This is for all the Americans who say "I want #chickens , but I don't have a #coop yet".

Chickens don't ask for much. I slapped this #chickentractor together with stuff I just had laying around. I didn't even use a tape messure. You can find materials at least as good as these at the dump, construction sites, and in some old lady's back yard who wants it gone. It would be better had I used screws instead of nails, and had I put some bracing in the corners. I will do some of that later. And probably add a door. This works for now.

Americans are wasteful and lack #creativity . Be #resourceful , and take advantage of that.

"And no man could by or sell unless he received the mark of the beast on his right hand or his forehead".

It happened in the roman empire. The Christians built their own decentralized economy to provide for their own.

There is nothing new under the sun.
