I suspect this will not be well-received but I feel the need to make it.

Bitcoin is not as decentralized as you would like to think it is. The technology is not horrible itself, and the lightning network makes Bitcoin much more viable for some of BTC's issues, but here are my thoughts:

Even a top-end GPU can only get an estimated $0.50 per day mining Bitcoin according to NiceHash. There are similar statistics for even a new AMD EPYC Server CPU at ~$0.52 per day. This means that consumers putting hundreds, if not thousands, into a computer and mining with it couldn't see any real profit. This also leaves the majority of the network power in the hands of those with large amounts of resources to buy top-end ASICs for mining operations, usually being governments or large companies.

Bitcoin has its benefits for some, but I see too much nonsense being spilled on Nostr about it. It's meant to be decentralized, but due to average consumers being unable to viably support the network and gain from it, big entities control the vast majority of the network. This post ignores other issues I have with it, but decentralization is what I mainly see preached that is not really accurate.

Man, I wonder if Amazon/book publishers are gonna complain about piracy skyrocketing soon. 🙄

I swear that companies hosting media don't know anything about what consumers want.

Honestly at this point, I think nostr needs a more diverse userbase to succeed. The protocol seems pretty solid, it seems like we have enough relays for the time being, and a lot of different applications have been developed.

If I want to use this as my social media, however, it's hard since most accounts I find are always posting about Bitcoin and Nostr itself. And I'm not super into cryptocurrency. Most of my following list is from the mastodon bridge or bots for that reason.

I love the protocol but if the user base doesn't change at all I may find myself back on activitypub self hosting.

If companies didn't have profits as their main incentive, this would not be the case.

The other thing we have to keep in mind is that, at least from what I see, open source projects end up providing the most technological innovation out there, many of which are developed in countries outside of the United States. Just comparing for-profit companies isn't exactly an accurate metric because of this.

This is the main problem with onboarding people to Nostr atm sadly. It's a whole lot of #bitcoin and #nostr talk with not nearly as much other content in between. I saw this opinion echoed multiple times on Mastodon.

But as the network grows, it'll get more diverse too. Nostr is only half the age of activitypub. Help by posting content unrelated to it while we're here anyways!

This is apparently Detroit right now. Crazy shit.

I really like Cherrytree as a general note taking program. You can put notes in a database and create notes under "nodes" and "subnodes".

I've heard a lot of people tout Obsidian for something like this as well, though.

Unfortunately people are more inclined towards convenience most of the time. Especially in the technology realm is where I witness that, but that statement can be applied to a lot of areas. As long as people don't want to give up that convenience that elite figures provide, those figures will continue to gain the power they desire.

What did we learn from the nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm outage? If you’re using AlbyHub and self hosting your Lightning wallet, you can still lose access to your funds. You don’t lose your funds, so that’s a plus. But, you can lose the ability to access your funds. I recommend always having a coupe of avenues available for accessing your lightning sats. Here’s my recommendation:

1.) if you’re running a node, spin up an instance of nostr:npub155m2k8ml8sqn8w4dhh689vdv0t2twa8dgvkpnzfggxf4wfughjsq2cdcvg This provides you with a truly self sovereign way of handling your lightning wallet.

2.) nostr:npub1h2qfjpnxau9k7ja9qkf50043xfpfy8j5v60xsqryef64y44puwnq28w8ch as a backup, but a custodial solution

3.) nostr:npub1hcwcj72tlyk7thtyc8nq763vwrq5p2avnyeyrrlwxrzuvdl7j3usj4h9rq also a custodial, but worth holding on to you can get it.

While nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm is cool, easy, and I’ll continue to use it. Just remember 2=1, 1=0, and 3>2. 🤙🏻

I think Cashu wallets are worth mentioning too (npub.cash, eNuts, etc). Mainly because you can choose which mint holds your sats opposed to the potential of losing your account entirely with a custodial solution mentioned above.

I have officially set up a tor relay. Still in its first phases, but it's listed on Tor Metrics now. Happy to contribute something to such an important project. Many more services to come!

I heard about this shortly after it happened with no updates. Wow! Glad no one died and hopefully those in the hospital have speedy recoveries.

I tried switching it to an npub.cash wallet so that might work better
