Question about #cashu #ecash: let’s say I run my own mint with LNBits. I’d be the only person using my mint (don’t want to custody other peoples money). So if I send ecash to someone else, it would result in a transaction from my node to whatever node hosts the other party’s mint.

Does this defeat some of the privacy advantages of ecash? Would it make more sense for me to trust someone else’s mint if the alternative is hosting my own for which I’m the only user?

Update re: Nodelou🐈

As many of my peers already know, the node suffered a catastrophic hardware failure and after initial investigation and troubleshooting it looks like I will have to use SCB to close all remaining channels– only two weeks shy of our three-year nodeiversary. 😿

While we were away for a few days, during the night of October 6th at approximately 12:43am EDT we experienced a power loss and then a large power surge of some kind, likely due to a wind event in our immediate location. This somehow led to the loss of *both* NVME system drives ☠️ which were configured in ZFS (RAID1)– Those drives sadly also housed the .lnd data directory for Nodelou🐈.

While I do have a fully working copy of the VM, including all LND data, that backup dates from a few days before the incident, so it would be unwise to come back online with out of date channel states– meaning we will have to close all remaining channels and rebuild the node completely.

Any channels with pending HTLCs have already been automatically force closed, but any other channel peers with Nodelou are welcome to close whenever they wish. I will issue the SCB sometime later tonight or tomorrow, depending on mempool conditions which should close any remaining channels at that time.

Thank you to all my solid channel peers, everyone that reached out during the downtime, everyone that has ever offered help and support over the past three years– So many great people in this community! I apologize for all the FCs (DM if you’d like reimbursement for fees incurred). Nodelou🐈 will rise again (with PostgreSQL and replication!)– But for now I need to focus on family and a number of important IRL commitments and worries that require my attention and mental space.

So long, and thanks for all the cats! 🐈🐈‍⬛🐈

“Excuse me, I came here for boobs. Why are you talking about Bitcoin? I want a refund!”

“Thank you for bringing that up! You see, Bitcoin transactions are irreversible so that puts the onus on the buyer to make sure they understand the terms of the sale before entering into the transaction!”

Man I love zapping.

Really I just love sending transactions over lightning. There’s something satisfying about the immediacy of it, watching the balance in my wallet decrement. Remember ln.pizza? I ordered so much dominos because of that.

But Nostr gives me a reason to do lots and lots of lightning transactions.

Huh ok. I mean I have the Alby relay, and yet NWC via Alby Hub was just too brittle. I would need to reconnect every day or two.

Good old fashioned manual zaps via BlueWallet involve a few more taps but I’ve got everything connected to LNBits which is absolutely sick. It handles LNDHub and LN addresses and makes it look easy*

*some additional configuration is required to support clearnet but after enough googling and digging through GitHub issues, the fix itself was quite easy

Even if not using a case, the fact that I can drop my phone over and over again and it keeps working (not even a cracked screen) is perhaps mankind’s greatest engineering achievement since the Apollo program. It’s really impressive.

Less than two decades ago I was carrying my LG Chocolate in my pocket (iykyk) and I gently walked into the arm of a couch. That soft and unremarkable impact was enough to cause it to die a dramatic death.

Technology is wild.
