I don't care what you think of me, only how you came to think it.

Sorry for starting my response before you finished editing. My settings page just tells me to install Orbot. Either way, this seems to be for regular relays on .onion domains, not Blossom servers.

There is a big difference between using Tor to connect to clearnet servers and using Tor to connect to darknet servers. I would love to pass all my internet traffic through Tor. But that doesn't mean there are a lot of darknet only sites or services that I'd want to connect to.

I don't have a fundamental issue with censorship resistant web hosting. It's just that I'm not particularly interested in any of the content that actually needs it.

In that case it seems like it would be on the client to initiate the connection through Tor. I can't imagine a world where such a client would ever connect with such a server by default, unless that server exclusively stores content that would be fine on the clearnet anyway.

Tor has been around for ages but I haven't seen a lot of interest from internet users. I was a regular visitor of one website that experienced deplatforming/web hosting issues and had to move to Tor for a period of time. During that period, I saw the number of users drop drastically. Nobody wanted to use Tor.

Maybe it would be different if it was automatically implemented in Nostr; maybe it would catch on if it was more convenient. But personally I don't see the appeal of pushing to integrate censorship resistant media with Nostr. If someone wants to browse loli content, people have already found a few clearnet web hosts who will tolerate it. And if they are looking for actual CSAM/child pornography, I'm sure there are still plenty of Tor users and .onion sites sites that the FBI will never be able to touch.

I don't want Nostr to drive away their users and piss off the FBI all so that they can provide a service that nobody wants or needs. I say leave Tor media servers for when we actually need them.

I am! Do you want to take advantage of Nostr's fantastic censorship resistance in order to insult me to my face? It's been way too long since someone's told me to kill myself, let alone shared a more personal or thought out insult.

There is always the idea that you won't do a very good job though, so I understand if you would prefer to just mute me and pretend I'm not here.

Would you believe I found a Nostr client that tries to make the user agree to confirm to China's speech standards before they can use it? Crazy, right?

Nah, Blossom servers will never be censorship resistant until they can leverage Tor to keep the host server secret. Media restrictions on the clearnet are just too ubiquitous. But I don't think Nostr needs media to be Nostr! To me, Nostr has always been about notes, not media.

The law is a cop-out response. All we have to do is arrest people for anti-semitism and it will stop being free speech too. So long as your platform always conforms to the ideals of the state, it will never be a robust free speech platform.

I don't think this applies to Nostr though. Images were never a core part of the platform and I would be shocked if the USA ever gives a shit about text based CP, or if Nostr ever gets in trouble for allowing the unchecked distribution of text based notes.

My phone sucks balls way too hard for me to try and link the post explaining it, but apparently Amethist is just blocking people who made the same post 5 times in quick succession.

Don't get me wrong, despite how skeptical I am in general, I definitely believe in these kinds of hypothetical weird targeted, passive-aggressive blocking. It's happened to me! Part of why I'm on Nostr actually...

I'm sorry, no matter what I try I can't get my app to block you without manually doing it. Maybe it's because I'm using an older f-droid version of the app from Github? Is your npub in the source code somewhere?

WHO?! Please give me an example so I can justify deleting Amethyst!

There are a ton of bots who could never return any attention you might give them, there isn't a lot of good content, (and most of said content comes from ActivityPub) the strong separation between users and relays means that we all have to manage our own npubs, it means thay relays have less natural incentive to be transparent or to differentiate themselves, and it means that users need to find a tool on top of or separate from their web browser just to connect! The fact that every front-end app draws from and contributes to the same pool of notes means that they have much less natural incentive to care whether their users are engaging with less established content, and the platform is filled to the brim with crypto LOSERS!

Does that answer your question? Do you have anything you want to add?

I think you will find that it actually takes quite a bit of skill and technique to produce this amount of raw force. Shame on you.

Fascinating! It sounds like open source software is just a means to an end to you too! The way to test that hypothesis would be to see what you would think of software that can be somehow proven to maintain some sort of internal condition (such as the integrity of a private key) without being decompilable.

I suspect this wouldn't be very difficult actually if programs that are infeasable to decompile are ever developed. The only reason proprietary software is so sketchy I think is because they are relying so heavily on security through obscurity. Perfect DRM and this goes away.

But I digress! Right now I see three issues with this new hypothesis. The first issue is your use of the term FOSS, instead of OSS. I have heard many people arguing strongly about how different those things are, even if the OSS allows people to reproduce the build. So which is it? Is it enough that the software be open source? Why add in that it be "free"?

The second issue is what you choose to complain about in this particular case. Your barf emoji doesn't seem to be based on Melvin somehow impacting security or transparency, but rather your complaints appear to be based on how Melvin's actions relate to the software community and ethos that you cherish on their own.

And finally, the fact that you chose a reasoning for your actions that is impossible to otherwise falsify is very sketchy! Of course you will claim you like security and transparency! At this point in time, security and transparency MEANS open source!

If you really don't feel entitled, then it just seems like you hate the idea that stinginess could mean missing out on software. It sounds like you would rather someone never make a piece of software public if they are going to make people pay for it. It sounds like you would have much preferred that Melvin kept his domain ideas to himself, rather than allowing anyone from the cashew team to realize what they might be missing out on.

But who knows! I would love to hear more from you. Your perspective is definitely different from mine. I wouldn't care at all if some Nostr developer tried to steal my account key for example! I really don't know what you are going to say next, and I'd love to hear more from you. Is there anything I'm still missing? Did I make any mistakes?

I do like my jokes, but I'd like you to treat those as my actual thoughts in this case. Is there anything that makes what I said look inauthentic?

I don't think it's ironic at all! As far as I'm concerned, the benefit of Nostr is that it puts the control in the hands of the user what content they allow themselves to see. To me, the fact that Nostr is open source is 100% a means to an end; I would value Nostr just as much if it was closed source and paywalled!

And of course I'm here in a conversation about an open source piece of software. I love talking with people I disagree with. It's a very important part of figuring out where your thought process went so wrong!

Speaking of which, is my guess on the mark? My first rough hypothesis was that you guys think developers have an obligation to produce software for strangers. Another weird idea is that you guys hate knowing that you are missing out on a piece of software, and would rather someone pretend not to have any software ideas than that you have to see software that you aren't willing to pay for.

Are either of those correct yet? Is there something I'm still missing?

Yep, if I was a parent, I would probably use my kids as bait so that I could do this to a pedophile.
